I agree. At this point, no speech is going to sell any member on changing his or her mind. Everybody is too dug in to change, no matter how wonderful these speeches make the candidate look.

It matters more when your party has both a slim majority and deep divisions.
Basically any rando who managed to get elected to the House could call for a snap vote to ouster the Speaker and between the slim majority and a solid bloc of dissidents, be kicked out. It would matter less (but still be annoying) if there was a sufficiently large majority for such a measure to be guaranteed to fail (which was another reason the midterms were such a letdown and led to the current standoff) or if the Speaker could be reasonably assured no divisions within the party were sufficiently deep for it to matter.
At least if it required 5, it would reduce the chances it happened.
