Would this rule only affect a Republican speaker (i.e. the Democrats have their own rule about challenging a Democratic speaker)?

Is there an idea as to why they are just doing these repeated votes one after the other? Are the McCarthy supporters hoping to wear someone down? Is there any way of viewing this that doesn’t look stupid?
Whatever resolution the main body of Rs are hoping for, I don’t see how just voting again will get them there.
I ask, because whatever you think of these sleazy fucks, one thing they ARE good at is maneuvering in their personal interest. And I just don’t see what they are up to here.
Could the main body of Rs solidify behind an R who might get sufficient support from the 20? Or will the 20 refuse to vote for anyone outside their circle of insanity?
The only actions they can take are roll call vote or adjourn. Have there been any motions to adjourn?
I wonder if Trump is sitting there watching C-SPAN, waiting for more Trump votes to come in…

The rumor apparently is they’re basically killing time while Emmer/McHenry and various of the holdouts review a deal they’ve worked out. Fox News is reporting that McHenry says “an agreement has been written and is currently being pored over by McCarthy’s side and members of the House Freedom Caucus.”
The McCarthy team probably doesn’t have the votes to adjourn, or at least can’t be certain of it.
Earlier speculation on CNN was that McCarthy doesn’t even have enough votes for an adjournment. The 20 « rebel Republicans » want to make it clear that he has no power over them, and the Dems are operating in the principle « Never interrupt your enemy when he’s shooting himself in the foot. »
In summary, the guy who wants to be in charge of the House can’t even muster the votes for an adjournment.
If they get to a written agreement, I wonder if they will read it into the record before the next vote (as was done in 1923)?
They said a similar thing last night about Chip Roy having a deal to bring 10 of the Never Kevin’s on board. We all know where that went.
I very much doubt he watches that channel.
