House Speaker Contest

He doesn’t have the votes to adjourn.

Who are the 11 others?

He lost 10 times. How many bites at the apple does he get??? Do they just keep calling for votes until someone finally says ‘all right???’ That is not an election.

This system is broken.

He gets as many bites as his supporters want, unless and until someone else gets a majority of votes cast.

This all should have been worked out within the Republican caucus ahead of time. McCarthy must have hoped that enough of his opposition would wither in the spotlight, so he took a chance.

He chose poorly.

Usually the question regarding truant members or factions of political parties is:
“Is it better to have them inside the tent pissing out, or outside the tent pissing in?”

The truculent objectors approach is: “we don’t want your stinking tent, we wouldn’t piss on it if it were on fire … and we’ve just set it on fire, anyway.”

Is there anything these guys agree on or is it simply they disagree on on principle?
If they back down now, do they fear they’ll get primaried?

For anyone watching CSPAN, just a minute ago the non-McCarthy R vote was 21. Now the scoreboard is gone again. Was there another defector or did the tally get screwed up?

Well, they were married at one time, according to his bio.

NY Times says that it’s 200 McCarthy, 212 Jeffries, 1 Present, 20 others.

This. If you look at the 1923 data I posted earlier, you see a similar pattern - two days of pretty much the same vote distribution over eight ballots before an agreement was made and the Speaker was elected on the first ballot on the third day. The insurgents got the deal in writing and read into the Congressional Record.

Might be a technical thing. CNN is showing 21 non-McCarthy votes.

Did this man just call cnn the Clinton news network and the anchor young lady?!?

Including the “present”? Must be a glitch they had 21 and also the “present” for 22 total.

ETA CSPAN fixed their scorecard. Back to 20 defectors, 1 present.

Ah. No, CNN’s 21 includes the “present.”

Why bother going to the trouble of creating a 3rd party? They just keep running as Republicans in the GOP primaries, win that, and win in the general. That way, they don’t have to run as « Freedom Party » against a GOP candidate. They just describe themselves as « True Republicans » or something.

Once elected, they don’t have to do anything to support the mainstream Republicans in the House.

A former Congressman was being interviewed this afternoon on CNN and said that all of the 20 come from very strong GOP seats, so there’s little chance they’ll be defeated in the general.

The Hill has a chart of how many rounds it took (greater than 1) to elect the Speaker. There’s a large clump of 2s and 3s, a gap, a second group in the 9-12 range. After that the numbers start to grow pretty quickly with no particular clustering:

22, 44, 63, and 133

Based on history, that seems to say that if it goes past 12, it really could be anything.

According to CNN:

Jeffries - 212
McCarthy - 200
Hern - 7
Trump - 1
Other - 12
Present - 1

Trump explains why fantasizing about winning after suffering repeated humiliating and ass-kicking epic losses is better than the more traditional route to victory of, you know….winning.

I read that thing twice and still don’t understand what point he thinks he’s making.

I gues I’m just not enough of a 3-D chess afficianado.

The toxic waste has eaten through the barrel and there is no bottom.

“If you wait by the river long enough, the bodies of your enemies will float by.”???

But then I never considered patience as a Trumpian virtue.
