Houston Advice?

Hey, who’s the only Irishman you can leave out in the sun? (Answer in as thick a leprechaun accent as you can manage):

Patty O’Furniture!

Nononono, this is Houston. You want yourself some Asian.

Sassy I tried to send ya an E-mail from the addy here on SDMB. I got an error message. Maybe the addy has changed or something.

Anyway, a Quick dopefest MIGHT be in order here!! Maybe somewhere on the boardwalk?

Sassy if ya need help getting anywhere, or directions, I can help. I know Houston like the back of my hand and can get ya anywhere you need to be. Heck tell the company to put me on the payroll for the week and I’ll play cheaffeur.(sp?) LOL! Might be cheaper than taxis!

If I can be of any assistance just E-Mail at my addy posted on bio page.

Yer from PASDENA?! Say Hi to Mickey if he’s still around.

I graduated a SHHS Trojan in '81. Do the busses still say PISD on the side? (That’s how I always felt about going to school that early.)

Hate to tell you this but Frenchies on Egret Bay & NASA 1 is now a Chinese Buffet. And they had the best tiramisu there! :frowning:

I was trying to remember, that might have been in '96. I did a Google Earth and it definitely wasn’t the Villa Capri that is, from what I gather, a Frenchies-owned restaurant. Different place altogether.

And Fionn asked if it was a stand alone restaurant. I’m pretty sure it was. The hotel was not attached, but was like in the same lot, or maybe across a side street. I remember walking from the room over to the place and having a couple of drinks before going back and getting cleaned up. The guys we were working for had selected this hotel and later came and took us to eat at the same place I’d been to drinking earlier. They were known there, the matre’d knew what they were drinking (he might have been the owner, we were treated like royalty) and called them by name.

Anyway, hate to hear it closed if that was indeed the place.

There is a restaurant on NASA 1 that had a sign reading “Our Mexican Food is so Authentic You Can’t Drink the Water!” It’s either right next to a hotel or part of the same building.

MiniDopeFest sounds great to me! Kemah boardwalk is a fun place and has a few restaurants to choose from. And don’t forget the amusement park rides and the mini-train.

How many HouDopers wanna go?

Thursday night is “Rock The Dock” on the boardwalk. This week’s band is Ezra Charles.

 It’s not still called Frenchies I hope.

Noclueboy Yep Ol Mick is still around. The original club is gone but he has opened a restaurant here in town. Must be doing OK always seems to be a full parking lot.

Yes the school busses do still have P.I.S.D. on the sides. I reckon we ALL felt that way about school here!

About that Mini-dope I say HECK YEAH!! Lets do it!! Seems like friday (a week from today) might be best. Any Ideas as to where? Somewhere on the boardwalk sounds good to me ,but might be a prob 'cause fridays are big there and parking CAN be a major pain. Maybe somewhere NEAR there ?

Any suggestions?

The north end of downtown has a lot of bars and clubs (i.e., bars that people think are trendy). My favorite is La Carafe, on Market Square. It’s just a beer and wine bar, but it’s the oldest building in Houston in its original location (there are a few older ones that were moved to Sam Houston park), and is loaded with atmosphere. If you drink at all, and are downtown, you should go there.

My favorite restaurant is Cafe Adobe, the original one at Shepherd and Westheimer. I’ve been there so many times I’m tired of the food (although the fajitas are wonderful), but it’s a great place for local color.

The Museum of Natural Science, in Hermann Park, has an extensive mineral collection, and the Cockrell butterfly exhibit (they’re alive, and all over the place, and some are HUGE), and at the moment they have the traveling Lord of the Rings exhibit.

The Museum of Fine Arts is pretty good since they put in the new building, but I think the only show there right now is some baseball thing (trying to bring in the yokels). There are a few other art museums around that might appeal. If you like folk art, definitely go to the Orange Show.

That’s about all I can think of right now.

Frenchy’s is still there- next door to the giant Chinese buffet. I have not eaten there, bit it is an Italian place.

Maybe it’s Zio’s or Carraba’s on Bay Area Blvd that was so good or perhaps Mario’s Buffet on Nasa I (not all that good).

Sassy, being in Laporte and without transportation, will not very likey make it into Houston much. There is a surprisingly good Italian restaraunt in La Porte, though- I just can’t remember the name of it. Everyone in La Porte probably know it, though

Checking in again before I work on deciding what to pack. I will have a computer on the trip, but it’s old and not dependable.

Some comments:
I would love to have a chance to meet you all, and I really don’t mind doing some travelling. After years of living without a car taking taxis is an expense I can absorb.

**Ruckinge **- I do like Asian food, but it’s hard to imagine you have any choices I can’t get here. If so, please advise.

I’ve always heard about Texas BBQ, so would hate to miss the chance to try it. Also, real Mexican food is a treat - most of this area is infected with California cuisine. I do like seafood, so will be checking the restaurants in Kemah for sure.

The only evening I am committed so far is Monday, so a mini-Dopefest would suit me. I do have to eat and I love meeting locals when I travel. I’ve received email from a couple of people and have provided my phone number, so please let me know when you make a decision.

And now, back to seeing what clothes I have that are good for hot weather!

One more thought about clothing:
Even tho Houston is often hot and humid, that’s outdoors. Inside, you might find some rather chilly temps. I recall that several theatres and museums kept their innards quite cold during the warm season.

Should we set up an e-mail ring so we can coordinate? It might be easier to contact each other directly.

Friday’s good for me. I’m off that Saturday so I can actually stay out later than 7 pm.

Davmilisav My E-mail is in my bio… Feel free to contact me (or anyone else that might have some Ideas for a place). I am afraid that reservations on the boardwalk might be dificult with short notice. However maybe someone knows of somewhere close that might work?

I wonder if we need to open a thread in MPSIMS to let folks know we are tring get a quick fest going? Might be that some folks didn’t open this thread.

Have any Houstonians eaten at the Seoul Garden on Longpoint? That’s a very good Korean BBQ.

Now in Houston. Hot. Did I mention hot? Will be checking back to see if any plans are made.

I’d like to get my name in for this get-together as well. I don’t post much but tend to lurk a lot; I just moved to Houston and am trying to see what is available here. Anyway, I will be monitoring this thread for updates, and my email is in my profile.

Might not be a bad idea. Especially since Sassy is already here.

Yes. Outstanding place.
