Houston Dopers - Help!

Three families are converging in Houston tomorrow from three different directions to perform our first annual parent to grandparent kid swap. I desperately need a suggested location (kid friendly) right off of I-10 for us to meet (fast food, park, etc.) None of us are from the Houston area.

OR, if any dopers have a link to a website so we could see what is at each exit at the interstate I’d appreciate it very much.

Thanks in advance!

You say everyone is coming from 3 different directions, but which highways specifically will folks be coming in on? Are any of the folks more averse to driving through/around town than others? Houston is an awfully spread out place, so any additional info you can give would be helpful.

Here’s a Houston realtime traffic link that may be useful as it’s also got construction and closure reports, etc. There’s a lot of construction going on with I-10 between the 610 loop to the west past Beltway 8 to Hwy 6. I’d be careful if choosing anyplace within that span.

Two of us are coming in on I-10. One from Baton Rouge (east of Houston), one from San Antonio (west of Houston). The third is coming in from Shreveport LA (north of Houston).

Thanks for the heads up on the construction - we’ll avoid that area.

Leaving for weekend but wanted to bump in case anyone can provide assistance.

From Shreveport, they’ll be coming down 59. 59 does intersect with I-10 but I’m not familiar with the area wrt it’s safety, facilities, etc.

Adoptamom, any ideas on Stana Claus’ questions? Are you hoping for equal drives for everyone? Is there a side of town you all would find preferable?

Be careful of I-10 at the west Beltway, it’s been closed frequently on the weekends as they install new overpasses. Right now it looks like it’s just the ramps not I-10 that’s closed.

On the west side of town, I-10 at Hwy 6, there’s a neat cluster of restaurants including a Lupe Tortilla that has a kids playground.

There’s also an Italian place, fish place, a burger joint, and nice pub all within walking distance.

If you’re talking about I-10 on the west side of Houston (actually, a bit west in the town of Katy, so it would favour the driver coming from San Antonio), I would consider Katy Mills. The Mills Malls are huge indoor outlet centers complete with food courts and plenty of stores. Since it is a Simon property, I would guess there is a Kidgits play area there as well, although it’s been over a decade since I last visited.

Last time I checked, Katy Mills also had a Games Workshop store. Let the Tech-Priests bestow your men with weapons of destruction!

If it’s not too much trouble for the San Antonio folks to take Hwy 6 and go around the north side of town, it would probably work out best to meet up where 6 hits US 59. That would work for the Shreveport folks, and the Baton Rouge group can take the beltway that direction and avoid the major tie-ups in town as well. And, if everyone has cell phones, just have the first one there pick a spot and call the others with the location.

Just checked the map and was reminded that Hwy 6 turns into FM1960 when it crosses Hwy 290. You might think about meeting up at Deerbrook Mall on the NW corner of the FM1960/US 59 intersection. There’s a food court, game stop, etc. Generally all the typical mall stuff.

And the travellers from Baton Rouge would probably want to take the Beltway 8 north from I-10 up to US 59 then go north on 59 to FM1960. At least, if it was me, that’s how I’d do it.

Since it’s asking for advice, this is more suitable for IMHO than GQ.
