Iz ther any plann to add a spel chequer to the SDMB at some tyme in the fewture? I’m a fairly gud speler, but I doo mayk misteaks, and I habe notixed somw uthers hace the sam problwm. Just a thot.
Buy a dictionary for Christ’s sake! Your last post made my eyes hurt.
The feature is provided for in vBulletin 2.2.4. We shall add it to the list of things to consider. Of course if it’s a feature that may cause slowdown on the server side there’s a good chance we may skip it.
Or you could just use Preview. Isn’t that what it’s there for?
You can compose your post in your favorite word processing program, use its spell checker, then post it here.
Hey, Geezer, you whooshed Arnold! Congrats, that doesn’t happen often!
Eh, I doubt whether they’ll be adding a spell checker, as the server is overloaded as it is. You’ve noticed how long it takes threads to load, right? That’s because we have 19,000 posters all trying to get into the pool at the same time.
Duck Duck Goose: Ha ha! I whooshed you. (Insert multiple poking-tongue emoticon smilies here.) I was joking. N.B.: I only use smilies when I’m kidding around.
Or did you just whoosh me by pretending to believe I was serious? Or…
I’m still fairly new. What’s “whooshed?”
Gawd! I just flashed on the image of 19,000 people jumping into a backyard swimming pool and couldn’t help wondering how many of them were peeing in it!
Arnold, I have a dictionary, I’m just lazy.
Crusoe, I do often use “preview” but because of the slowness (the reason for which has just been explained to me) I more often try to edit my posts before posting. I often miss things until they’re already posted. Also, (see above) I’m just lazy.
rowrrbazzle, Composing on my WP is a good idea. Maybe I’m not that lazy.
Everybody, I’m sorry I brought it up. Except for the fact that I’ve been introduced to the term “whooshed.” Now if I only knew what that was!
Oh, and Duck Duck Goose, is it possible to goose a duck (or vice-versa)? Just curious.
But there is a built-in spell checker. All you have to do is include in your post a statement about the spelling mistake of another member and people will come out of the woodwork to spell check your post.
No worries, Geezer. Point taken, I don’t usually preview much either.
By the way, “whooshed” is the comment made when someone wants to suggest you didn’t quite understand what they were saying – usually implying you missed humour or irony in a statement. Well, that’s what I thought it meant anyway – as in “Whoosh! That went straight over your head!”
If this spell checker is introduced, please have pity on us non US-English types, and not have an MS-Word style one that highlights as you type. That’d be pretty irritating.
DesertGeezer - don’t worry about asking questions, that’s what this forum is for. But before asking a question, read any FAQ and announcement threads. And be prepared for some sarcastic comments, which is the general tone of this board.
“whoosh” - Crusoe explained it.
Hope your enjoy your stay at the Straight Dope, and don’t forget to read The Straight Dope books.
Well, Arnold, it WAS a “mad” smilie… How was I supposed to know you hadn’t finally popped your little Swiss cork and decided to chuck the Donna Reed Image and go for the Stone Cold Steve Austin “Trailer Park Trash” look?
Why do people always assume that the Swiss are short in stature? Maybe it’s a huge cork.
