Hey folks, lets give the Mods a break. They have been working like crazy this past weekend, and having everyone throw in their two cents all over ATMB can’t be helpful. I started this thread for one reason. If you have any suggestions for the new MB, post them here. That way Tuba will have an easy place to go look for them, and a forum to reply to specific ones. It should also help eliminate different dopers makeing the same suggestions in five different threads. One word to the wise: Tuba has already said that their main concern over the next few weeks will be getting this thing running smoothly. If your suggestion is not a major one, don’t expect them to drop everything and impliment it. Remember that the mods and techies are riding heard on an unbroken pony here, their first concern should be and is making sure that everything works smoothly. I am going to start a similar bug thread too. Now my suggestion:
If vBB had the capability, could you add a dictionary button at the bottom of posts for spellcheck? I have seen this on other boards, and it is a big help. I frequently think faster than I can type, and this helps run down typos.
P.S. BTW, thanks for making the visited thread links change colors, it’s a big help.
-I think it would be nice to search on names with spaces in them, somehow. Maybe with quote marks?
-Already noted elsewhere, more smilies would be nice.
(aside to weirddave: I’ve tried web-based spell checkers and they often are a disappointment. Yahoo has one, and by the time you tell it to skip 3 or 4 proper names you could have roasted a turkey. But maybe you’ve had better luck.)
Since this board is so lively at certain times of day, it would be nice to have the feature of returning you back to the topic you posted to rather than the forum page.
This comes in handy for times when people post at the same time, plus if you are a person like me, I open threads up in a separate window and may have 2 or 3 threads open at one time.
And, if you made a mistake on the thread, you can catch it right away.
“Next Thread” and “Last Thread” do not work for me at all. Sometimes pressing “next thread” brings me back to the top of the one I’m in, over & over. Sometimes it takes me to the previous thread. Is it just me?
One thing that would help is if the rule about what is required was on the same page you post from, or at least on the “how to use {img}” page. Then people like me wouldn’t have simply have learned by example, like I did. Once I posted, there were not lack of people who said “we discussed copyright and bandwidth last month.” Exactly zero of that discussion reached me in time.
The banning of image files happened right after you got here . . . and you had a part in making that happen, so I’m not so sure you have a right to complain overmuch.
That being said, I also point out that all of this is a work in progress and we have not dotted every i or crossed every t. The software is new, we are working bugs out of it (that’s our first priority) and little things like making sure we have all the directions spelled out must by necessity come after.
Sorry for your inconvenience.

PS I noticed you posted this same reply in another thread. Crossposting of this sort of thing is something else we don’t allow. Please do not do this again. We hear you the first time.
I’d like to see a change in the **“View Today’s Active Threads” **button.
When I pushed it I got 270 threads, by 20’s. 13 double-windows full. Not particularly well guaged.
Why not cut it back to about an hour.
Then you can see who’s posting that might answer back while you’re still logged in. That’s really all you want. The other ones are shown by the pink envelopes, after all.
Please move them away from the humungous The Straight Dope banner. They line up along the right side of the banner and make the web page much wider than my screen (at low res – but that’s changing real soon!).
It’d be better if they lined up under the banner, or, they were in a column along side the banner, rather than all of them trying to fit on the same row.
Is it just Netscape (4.7), or me, but trying to embolden a text only turns it into verdana font? And yes, I do know you need to use the square brackets.
The above post title (“Make…”) appears to me as true bold, but this line…
this is supposed to be bold, this bold italics, this bold underline
doesn’t look bold at all. {shrug}
Peace.
The new board is better than the old! Hooray!! Good job.
Nope. To me, the “Does this look bold…” line just appears as a slightly different sans seriff type font.
Quoted text, as above, should also appear bold, but again, to me, it’s just verdana rather than arial. Only the optional message titles appear as true bold to me. I’ve had Norton check my registry, so there’s no obvious glitch in my registry.
Are profiles available for just anybody to look at, or are they restricted to members?
I’d rather not have just any lurker be able to find my name and address (on my web page, coming soon to a profile near you) because they’ve followed a link in a thread and like the way I look. If profiles were restricted to members it would add some security.
You must have a Macintosh. DrMatrix and I are having the same problem. It seems that on a Mac, the arial font has to be size=3 or larger to see bold.
We first noticed this on OpalCat’s Board before SDMB made the software change. We e-mailed her about it and she has since changed some of the forums from ariel, helvetica to helvitica, ariel. We now see bold in the changed forums.
Another way to correct this would be to use size=3 with the arial font.
No, I’m not using a Mac. It’s a PC in low resolution. And, as you’ve stated, arial doesn’t embolden correctly below a certain point size (10 point).
When I enlarge the font (in Netscape, CNTRL-]), then the bolding starts to work correctly. Or, when I set prefences to have the font at 12 point, rather than 10, it emboldens correctly.
However, since I don’t like that wasteful large print on my screen, I set prefences to use verdana as my default font at 10 point, and set the preference to force that font in the display, rather than accepting the font set by the web page.
And so, now I see my nice 10 point sans serif font (verdana) with correct bolding.
