Generally good examples counter to my statement. However, Caesar was killed because his killers thought him too ambitious. Alexander died so young that its hard to know what would have been his fate. By modern standards his empire was pretty small.
Queen Victoria is OK but her empire was assembled bit by bit, by others from relatively primitive societies. Napolean tried to control Europe which consisted of old societies that were just as advanced as that of France.
