12 straight! First time in 65 years. Can this year be the end of the curse? (The perennial optimistic Cub fan.) The Cubs are near the bottom in batting, but lead the league in pitching. Wood’s ERA is just above 4, but Lieber is under 3, Taverez is 3.30, and Tapani is 3.63. Those aren’t great, but combined are the best in the League.
Well, that amazing stretch is now over. We’ll see if these guys are really for real when they go up against the Cardinals later this week. Nothing against the Reds or Brewers but they’re not the Cardinals.
Well, the thing here is, whether the Cubs are better than the Cards or not (and I think that’s pretty obviously ‘not’), they just don’t match up well against them. St. Louis has a ton of lefty power, and the Cubs don’t have any lefty starters. So I wouldn’t read too much into what happens this week. After all, while the Reds and Brewers aren’t the Cardinals, they’ve done a pretty good job of beating the Cardinals
Still, I hope the race is close until the end of July. I’m going to the game on the 26th(?), which is against the Cards (I think). I’d really like to see the Cubs knock the Cards out of the race.
as a cubs fan for 10 years now, I can remember when I wanted to play with andre “the hawk” dawson…its finally great to actually have something to watch and cheer about.
Well, whether the Cubs match up against the Cards well or not is pretty big, but not everything. They’re gonna have to show that they can beat the Cards at least some of the time. Otherwise, they’re gonna have a lot of problems staying in the division race and maybe (big maybe) getting into the playoffs. You can’t go on not beating the main opposition in your division forever.
A prediction from a long-suffering Cub fan (the only kind of Cub fan there is).
This is their year. They’re going to do it. They’re going all the way to the Series. To become the first team in baseball history to lose the Fall Classic after taking a 3-0 advantage.
Well, OK, maybe that’s not going to happen, but it would be so Cub-like.
The Cubs are winning, but bad news for Comcast Cub fans. Comcast has dropped WGN in favor of Court TV. Can you believe that? It doesn’t matter to you folks that can get WGN directly or by satellite, but we who rely on Comcast are SOL. If you have other cable, you may still get the games.
This is unAmerican, unpatriotic, and violates our constitutional rights. It violates the 11th Commandment: thou shall follow the Cubs on WGN. How can we get this matter rectified?
Well they swept those pesky Cardinals today. Not bad at all.
Despite the trash-talking over in the MPSIMS thread, I still wouldn’t read too much into this. It’s still only June, after all…
muttering under my breath…“must believe…no, can’t believe…must belive…NO, can’t believe…”
They’re going to do it to me again, I can feel it sigh
But it’s still nicer than the other ways that I’ve had my heart broken…
I am ecstatic over our recent sweep of the Cards. Especially that drubbing where Zuleta had that pinch-hit grand slam. DO NOT TRADE HIM!
I’ve always wondered, what is everyone’s problem with Chip Caray? I admit that Joe Carter needs some work, but he seems knowledgeable and after some experience he could be good. I’ve never known what people have against Chip.
Also what’s the deal with the Mark Grace ripping?
-an out-of-the-loop Cubs fan
Hey, I like Chip Caray. What, people have a problem with him? I don’t know anyone that actively dislikes him. I mean, he’s a dork, but in a good way!
And who’s ripping on Gracie? When I went to the Cubs v. D-Backs game, he was given a healthy round of applause.
My Astros fan boyfriend comments after every win these days how the Cubs might be for real this time. I have to yell at him to shut UP, he’s jinxing it. He just does it to make me mad. Sheesh. It takes a Cubs fan to understand.
You guys that don’t like Chip Caray should have heard Jack Brickhouse, if you didn’t. He was as blind as a bat. A ball out and high he would call low and in. Too much beer, I think, like Harry. And I’m sure you guys never heard of Bert Wilson. He was the radio announcer before there was TV, or before I had it anyway. You know radio: tv without the picture. He really got excited over a game, so excited that he died of a heart attack.
Jack Brickhouse was from Peoria and owned a famous restaurant there. He owned part of WGN, I think, before he died, so they couldn’t get rid of him.
I haven’t been to the MPSIMS, and now that I’ve been forewarned, I’m not going.
F***ing White Sox.
sigh
The Cubs have ended their 4-month stay on top of the world, but it was nice while it lasted. What happened to the pitching? Where’s Kerry Wood.
Comcast, the local cable, doesn’t carry WGN, but I watched them the other day on ESPN. Billy Williams’ number is on top of the right field foul line. Quite appropriate inasmuch as he’s the lst base coach. Ernie Banks’ number is on top of the left field foul line. He once was the 3d base coach, but I don’t know where he is now.
Does anyone know what Ernie is doing? How long has Billy been the 1st base coach? What do you think of this new hitter the Cubs got? (He certainly helped yesterday.) One final question: are the Cubs going to win it all and overcome this long-time jinx?
