How are Pakistan - Bangladesh relations?

It’s been about 40 years since East Pakistan broke away from West Pakistan to become Bangladesh.

How are relations between the two countries now? Deep freeze? Two countries in same region so they have to work together on some issues, but grudgingly? Best buds - let bygones be bygones?

(Put this in GQ because I’m hoping there’s a reasonably non-controversial answer.)

It depends on the party in power in BD. The erstwhile nationalist and unionists formed two parties, who have been exchanging power. The Awami League tends to be antagonistic to Pakistan and pro India (they are the descendants of the nationalists), though not on all issues. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, (which confusingly is the descendants of the old pro-Federal unionists) tends to take a narrow view of India and wants better relations with Pakistan, though again this is not an absolutist issue.

Here is a good article from a Pakistani professor : Why Bangladesh overtook Pakistan - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

Quote from cite : “ Its (Bangladesh) growth rate last year (7.8 per cent) put it at par with India (8.0pc) and well above Pakistan (5.8pc). The debt per capita for Bangladesh ($434) is less than half that for Pakistan ($974), and its foreign exchange reserves ($32 billion) are four times Pakistan’s ($8bn).”

The Wikipedia page gives a good summary of relations : Bangladesh–Pakistan relations - Wikipedia

There’s also the issue of Bihari Pakistani refugees in Bangladesh who the Pakistanis have abandoned despite many promises.

The fact that they don’t share a border creates a situation where there is less chance of disagreements. Unlike India and Pakistan, there can never be a dispute about exactly where the border is and one country’s military will never start aggressively massing at the other country’s border.

Both countries are predominately Sunni Muslim.

A better way to judge this is how to Pakstani and Bangladeshi populations in other countries get along.

.UK has a large population of both Pakistani and Bangladeshi.

They practically ignore each other. They prefer to live in different areas, speak different languages and basically do not interact. There is no kinship or any love between the 2 communities. They are a different type of people. No common ground other than religion.
