Let’s say an American, British, Canadian or Australian secret agent is killed in the course of duty. How are their sacrifices ever recognized? Do they lie forever in anonymity, their sacrifices a compete mystery to their descendants?
They have chosen to be what they are. They knew that their family might be lied to in the event of their death they are fine with that, obviously, as well as never receiving any recognition.
There’s a memorial in Valençay commemorating the members of the British Special Operations Executive who died in France in World War II. It was dedicated in 1991, fifty years after the first SOE agent arrived in France; presumably there was no point at that time in keeping any of the names secret. At least some of the SOE agents killed had already received public tribute: for instance, the 1958 film Carve Her Name with Pride is a biopic of Violette Bushell Szabo.
Well we could tell you…but then we would have to kill you…
sorry, just too tempting had to be done
The NSA also has a memorial.
They have a really big party when they join to make up for the lack of commemeration on the way out
Anyone know when the last couple of stars were added to the CIA wall?
Nevermind, found it.
Makes you wonder what went down in '83 and '89.
Weren’t there some agency double agent mole(s) they blamed for agents deaths around one of those times?
Aha, good point, Aldrich Ames.
1983 = US Embassy Beirut bombing.
1989 = PanAm 103?, UTA 772?, Panama, Afghanistan.
Yeah, but I believe Ames only compromised foreign sources. People in other intelligence services, like the KGB, who were providing info to the CIA as double agents. I don’t imagine they would be listed on the wall.
