Cool link. Thank you.
Just thought I’d share this photo of the three piglets who continue to enjoy treats in our yard, as I (so far unsuccessfully) plot to trap them and send them to the farm.
In that photo they are eating ulu (breadfruit) bread. We’ve been experimenting with various treats to lure them (the idea is to find things they like to eat without breaking the bank - everything is expensive here). So far I can report that they are quite pleased with pineapple cores/peels, and okayish with apples and bruised strawberries.
But today I put out some scraps from a loaf of ulu bread that was starting to get moldy. The pigs were in heaven! It was clear they thought ulu bread is the best thing ever.
Toss it into Halemaumau inside a cooking cage for about three hours, turning often. Pull it out, eat.
The “pinkish skin” bit means that you wouldn’t recognize most domesticated pigs in Europe as being pigs. For some reason it’s the image from popular media, but Ibéricos are black, Duroc are brown with black bristles, there are also pinto ones… the Landrace are pink; that or similar varieties must have been the most common ones wherever the media image originated.
Kill everyone you see, Lualu follows…
Here in south Texas, they are a menace. Their population is estimated at over two million, and the average adult feral hog weighs about twice as much as a WalMart shopper. Drivers of large pickup trucks with protective grilles (almost everyone) is encouraged to swerve over and hit them if they see them on the highway. Ranchers estimate the economic damage from these animals to be in the billions;. They are good to eat, and the season is always open.
Even though I have no sympathy for ranchers, I understand that these pigs are terribly destructive to their non-native environments (do they even have native environments?) But the thought of rednecks in penis trucks intentionally hitting them is disgusting. I’m sure a lot of them don’t die right away. Get rid of them, fine, but be humane about it. They’re living creatures.
Encouraged by whom? I’m sure not by the Department of Transportation or by any state or local law enforcement authority. :dubious:
Yeah, nobody is advising guys with trucks to deliberately run over feral pigs.
Of course it’s true that wild pigs have become much more common in the past 20 years, they are pretty destructive and dangerous, and it’s open season on them.
The more rednecks out shooting pigs for fun, the better. But intentionally running them over in your truck is not a thing.
I myself thought pit barbecue.
Not to mention that some of those things can weigh hundreds of pounds and will do serious damage to a truck, or car, if you hit one.
I know several guys who make a sport out of chasing down and running over pigs in fields. They follow up with hand guns. These guys have special bumpers on their trucks and will not hesitate to take them out on the road.
I went pig hunting on a ranch in Texas. I found it interesting that bobcats were about as common as house cats on this ranch. I have to believe the bobcats are feeding on baby piglets.
The one on the left is sizing up the photographer for a meal.
