How best to give to charity for Katrina?

Here’s the deal- I want to donate some money to try to help our New Orleans friends. I’m donating blood in about an hour, but I also want to give some money.

I’m just not sure who to give it to. I want to make sure that 100% of the money I’m donating actually gets where it’s needed- so which charity’s best for that?

Also, I’d rather donate cash- anonymously would be best. I hardly get any spam calls now, and I’d rather keep it that way. What would be the best way for me to make sure that my donation doesn’t give multiple charities (who might not all be on the up-and-up) my contact information and imply that I’m a soft touch?

Thanks in advance.

Here’s a place to start: http://www.fema.gov/press/2005/katrinadonations.shtm

My parents will be donating through my Dad’s place of employment. This is partially because my mother is uncomfortable giving cash to persons on streetcorners with buckets from the Salvation Army and partially because Dad’s place of employment (A deliberately unnamed major corporation) will be matching funds donated through them. That way Mom’s $20 will be turned into $40. NOTE: I have no information on the actual sum my parents will donate and wouldn’t tell you if I did.

The National Guard was collecting bottled water at a local grocery store. I asked one of the soldiers what they needed, and he told me all they were taking (on Wednesday) was water. At the time (still?) it was the only thing they could fly in to the areas, and clean water is pretty important.

There are several websites that tell you how charities spend money. I posted some links in the SDMB Katrina Donation File thread in MPSIMS. Once you decide how/where to give, you can go add to that thread…

I don’t seem to be able to find it again, but I’m sure that I saw something on one of those sites about reducing mail from charities. I’ll come back and post the link if I find it again.
