How big of an ego do you need to call yourself Charlamagne tha God?

Pretty simple–“You’re a queen? Okay, I’m a god!”

is that really boldness and self confidence, for a radio DJ to call himself god?

If he wants to call himself charlamagne and god, have at it.

I recently got a job as a lifeguard as a swimming pool. I think I’ll change my name to martin luther king krishna jr. The name “Rosa Parks ahura mazda” was my first choice but it was taken by a waitress at the waffle house.

Yeah, I thought that comment was too ignorant to respond to. Thanks for confirming!

A black entertainment professional calling himself Charlemagne tha God knowing damn well he’s gonna open himself up to criticism from a legion of white folks who think that black people have some moral obligation to live up to their cultural preferences and expectations? Yeah, that takes balls. Especially when you consider the fact that his employer or contract holder is most likely a white person.

A white American guy using the names of civil rights hero’s to make joke names in what I presume is an effort mock and ridicule…something. That would take balls too…and a willingness for every sane person in the world to think that you’re racist as hell. But hey, you feel free to call yourself whatever makes you feel good and we’ll keep judging you and your questionable choices.

You know, BeagleJesus, you’re probably not the one who should be pointing fingers.

You can use the sacred names of other peoples cultures to ride your ego on their success and accomplishments, and thats ok, but your choice of sacred names are off limits to being used by other people to boost their egos and visibility. If your preferred sacred names are off limits, why are other cultures sacred and accomplished names acceptable. Then again people and bands call themselves the devil or satan all the time, there are lots of latino people named Jesus, etc. But names like Jesus and God are just as sacred to some people as ahura mazda, krishna, martin luther king jr, rosa parks, are to other people. And I’m an atheist, I have no loyalty to christianity.

Which again, seeing how I picked the name Wesley Clark probably sounds pretty hypocritical. I picked it more as a tribute to his time as NATO commander.

Also since Martin Luther King was named after Martin luther, there is that too.

BeagleJesus, you are patient as shit, and I salute you.

My motto has always been and will always be, you do you and I’ll do me and we’ll meet up where we intersect. You get to like what you like and you get to not like what you don’t like for any and every reason you choose, be they real or imagined. But the catch is, I get to do the same.

I have no problem with people judging me for using the name Jesus. I just don’t give a fuck. They get to think whatever the hell they want and I get to not care if they like it or not. In my opinion, I think Charlemagne tha God has a similar attitude. You’re going to be judged one way or another. Might as well be judged for something you chose.

I never said that you couldn’t call yourself one of those names. Once again, you do you. But let’s just be real here, if any white guy in 2020 America decided to make a parity of a civil rights hero’s name then they most certainly would be seen as racist. Ya know, history and all that. And anyone in 2020 America who decided to make a parity of a sacred Christian name would be seen as blasphemous. And I am ok with that.

Yeah, it’s taking longer than I thought too…

Did you have this big an issue with Buddah Records? The Warren Zevon led band the Hindu Love Gods? That Joni Mitchell album called Hejira? Or for that matter the Outkast song “Rosa Parks”? For that matter, Hispanics use the name “Jesus” precisely because they are Christians–unless you’re one of those people who don’t think Catholics are Christians, and that’s a whole different kettle of fish.

Ohhhh. So this dumbass (me) finally caught the fiber of the thread. First off, apologies for my snarky comment upthread.

So, if I understand it, the OP thinks someone(?) who calls himself " Charlamagne the God" is being a douche, right?

I scrolled past this thread thinking it was actually about HRE Charlamagne:smack: and thought “well, duh”. Then I checked in out of curiosity and the link took me to a video, but the only label I saw was “Kendrick LaMar”. Not being familiar with the genre, I didn’t think the artist was KL, and frankly, that rap does not seem Pulitzer worthy to me.

Now there’s talk about “five percenters” (?) and talk about faith and I have no idea what we’re talking about now.

I thought entertainers dubbed themselves all kinds of things out of bravado and image building. Like, Queen Latifah is not actually a monarch and Lady Gaga has not been bestowed and honorific by the the royal house.

Which leads me to believe either the OP, or I (most likely)is a bit clueless.
Not being willfully obtuse. I’m quite dense against my own will.

I never heard of them before today, either. It is a wacky cult spun off Nation of Islam.

Might as well call this thread something about old white guys discovering hip-hop culture exists after 50 years

Wait just a minute, here. Do you folks mean to tell me that these “hip-hopping” fellows sometimes engage in boastfulness? Has anybody told the President?!

I have similarly surprising news about Madonna.

I went with, “Master of Time and Space”. No business cards, but I had several magazine subs with that job title, and I used to enjoy seeing ads coming to me with that descriptor, which told me where they got my name.

Worst of all the Duke of Earl is neither a Duke or an Earl. Lies, it’s all lies!

My knowledge goes no deeper than Wikipedia but apparently his pseudonym as a drug dealer was “Charles.” When he went in a different direction he built off of that. And he thought “tha God” sounded cool.

I don’t know how a Kendrick Lamar video got linked to a thread about Charlemagne tha God. But since we’re on the subject and if you’ll permit a brief hijack…

To my old school hip hop sensibilities Kendrick is a bit of an acquired taste due to the fact that he likes to take risks and push the boundaries with his flow and his musical choices. That being said, his lyrics are pretty damn good and he’s not afraid to discuss the complex and often hypocritical aspects of black life and culture in US.

My favorite song (and video) from the album is DNA which I think highlights much of what I said above (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLZRYQMLDW4).

[Big Shout Out To War Machine]

The Pulitzer board described his album as: “a virtuosic song collection, unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.” And it’s the first time a musical genre other than classical , opera or jazz has won a Pulitzer so I am proud of his accomplishments and happy that he has been able to elevate the art form such that folks who are considered “serious critics” have even bothered to take time out and consider him for such a prize.

And here’s a review from Pitchfork: Kendrick Lamar: DAMN. Album Review | Pitchfork
