I don’t think we’re disagreeing. I don’t think it’s a brilliant question, and it’s obvious when you think about it. But, it’s hardly worth lambasting someone for.
I stand by my original statement that the OP was being “a bit harsh”.
Someone the other day asked me how long my next marathon was. I pointed out that all marathons were the same length. She didn’t know because she doesn’t run mararthons. No big deal.
Yeah, I guess when you put it like that, it is to be expected that people won’t know anything about portrait and landscape orientation of photographs. Like the length of a marathon, it’s not something they come across in their every day lives.
Remembering some of the arguments I’ve seen over the relative vitues of wide screen vs pan n scan versions of movies, I’m not at all surprised to learn that many people have no concept of scale or proportion.
Cut off the left or right 6 inches of the print. Rotate that removed section 90 degress and duct tape it (front or back, your artistic choice) to the top or bottom of the remaining portion of the print. Mat, frame, and send it with a letter stating that you are happy to accomodate special requests of your customers.
Optionally, request that your customer take a big block of wood and cut out an 11X17 rectangle from the middle of it. Tell them to rotate it 90 degrees and fit it back in the hole from which it was removed. Explain that if they actually accomplish this, your print will resemble what is left of the block that they removed.
I suppose the ebayer could have assumed the picture had been cropped from a much larger original. In which case she may just have wanted a recropping in portrait format.
Won’t work. When I did phone support for Microsoft, I would ask people to do stuff like this. That is, I would ask them to draw a 14" line down the length of 11" paper. After a few minutes of silence, they would come back and say “OK, now what?”
Ok, and if the buyer asked whether panache45’s 11x17 landscape shot was “tall” or “wide”, much fewer people would be ridiculing her. But she obviously knew the definition of “landscape” and “portrait”, as she requested that one be changed to the other.
