Okay, so Mr. Jeannie and I are sitting here watching “Xanadu.” You may be asking, “Why?” It’s because a dear, lifelong friend of mine proclaims it to be her favorite movie.
Now, as I’m watching it, I’m thinking it may be a funny diversion, a guilty pleasure, something along those lines. But a favorite movie? Geez…
Anyone have similar feelings about this or any other film?
I never understood the overwhelming popularity of Saving Private Ryan. Okay, the battle scenes were great - but a Spielberg movie with good special effects; what’s so unusual about that? And the rest of the movie was second rate. The characters and the plot were all cliches.
Xanadu is not my favorite movie, but I do love it… Come on now, Gene Kelly is in it!
I also love Brigadoon (Gene Kelly again) and often find myself singing “What a fine day it’s been, what a rare mood I’m in… why it’s, almost like being in love…” (Probably not exact lyrics, but it’s what I sing.)

Personally, I only watch it for the music. I love ONJ’s voice and could listen to it all day, even some of the crappier songs she’s done. I love Xanadu’s theme which features her and ELO. IMO, one of the better songs to come out of the disco era.
OTOH, I think the story and acting has all the intelligence and charm of a Rush Limbaugh monologue, but maybe that’s just me.

We all have different tastes. I don’t like 'em, don’t understand their popularity. Doesn’t mean I should be a victim of such extreme violence as being beaten on by three women with a nerfbat.
You can enjoy any movie you like! Just don’t ask me along on video night, as I’d only insist on watching The Borrowers or Toy Story …
Re: Xanadu: I cannot fathom the animated sequence, nor the battle of the bands sequence. All I can figure is, the script must have gone through so many rewrites that ultimately, no one could agree on what the heck it was supposed to be about. Also, I think both the DP and the wardrobe department were high as kites.
“His eyes are as green as a fresh-pickled toad,
His hair is as dark as a blackboard,
I wish he was mine, he’s really divine,
The hero who conquered the Dark Lord.”
I never understood the popularity of *The English Patient * either.
To me, it looked like a Ralph Lauren Sahara collection on display for over two hours. The characters, at least from my point of view ( sitting sullen on a couch being forced to watch the debacle.) had not a damn thing in common and, well, they deserved to die alot earlier than planned.
Saving Private Ryan was brilliant in the battle scenes alone. The rest of the movie was formulatic ( is that a word?) and right out of a John Wayne movie.
That what does not kill me, postpones the inevitable.
