A letter I saw in the paper the other day said something to the effect of “I’m scared to go into the city, and that’s why I’m voting for Trump.”
This could be pure racist paranoia – someone who believes that a 2nd-term Trump will unleash the full power of the military to round up all the bad guys once and for all. Just like that, cities are safe again!
Or it could be someone who notes that (most) big cities have been run (mostly) by Democrats for several decades, decades in which those cities have become much more dangerous (even though, statistically they haven’t). Someone who believes this logic would naturally believe the only solution is to wipe out the Democrats – so, as much as they might dislike Trump, they have to support him.
The poster you are replying to stopped posting after I pointed to a very damming report from Foreign Policy Magazine about how Trump has dismantled our foreign policy in post #69
Some feel they need to attack anything that could even tepidly be pointed at that Trump might have sort of kind of done right. This is the Straight Dope after all, so it’s kind of how things are here. I’m unsure why people feel the need to do this, especially with the fervent Trump supporters, as there is no amount of evidence that’s going to sway them from voting for the man. Waste of electrons, but then so is posting contrary evidence with a fervent CTer, yet we do that all the time as well.
Asinine though it may seem, the civil unrest of the past few months IS going to energize a lot of Trump’s voters, and in all likelihood it will sway a non-insignificant number of swing voters to the Republican side in the Midwest. We can debate the difference between the protestors and the looters, or the difference between BLM and Antifa, and root causes and systemic racism, until we’re blue in the face, but most of America does not care about these distinctions, and fears of civil unrest plays right into the hands of Trump’s whole campaign team and all his surrogates.
I think the civil unrest news today does help Trump (which, I’m afraid, also means that police misconduct on video — apparent or actual — also helps him).
Then, I also think that news about Falwell must dispirit at least a few of his potential voters.
There are homeless camps because it’s very expensive to live here. Because people want to live here. You can get a house in Waco for a third of what I paid. But then you have to live in Waco.
Yeah, there are 2 big lies from the Republicans in power. Claiming that all the cities are destroyed and that Democrats are supporting the violent protests.
It is also not very conductive to win votes when Trump and henchmen declare mothers and grandmothers that protested peacefully as being in the same level as violent rioters. they vote too you know.
Traveling the past couple of years, I was impressed at the homeless presence in Denver and Austin. While that did not thrill me, I’m unaware of the Republican plans to improve/change the situation. Please educate me.
