How can I choose a pillow?

At the beginning of the night my pillow is the perfect height to support my head when I sleep sideways. However, I’ve been walking up in the middle of the night and noticing that my pillow has deflated to the point where my head is no longer level with my spine, resulting in neck pain and discomfort.

I need a new pillow, but I have no idea how to choose a pillow that won’t deflate in the middle of the night.

Any suggestions?

Buckwheat hull pillow!
I have several pillows but the one I use for my head is a buckwheat one. It really does stay the same height and shape all night.
I just googled and there are a ton available ranging from very reasonable to quite expensive. I can’t remember what brand mine is; I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond a couple-three years ago for (I think) about $40.00.

I have exactly the same issue, and only one pillow does it for me.

Get yourself a Ralph Lauren Lawton pillow, extra firm. They’re artificial fiber, not down. I always joke that down pillows are called that because they squish down so thoroughly by morning.

In fact, I just got myself a couple of new pillows yesterday of this brand and am going to sleep on one tonight. The previous one lasted for years.

I use a memoryfoam pillow for continued support all night long. It’s also anti-dust mites, which I’m allergic to, so I don’t have to buy a special casing.

Personally, I could never stand memory foam. If you try to move around you have to hold your head in the new spot until the hole fills back in or it just falls back in. Drove me nuts.

My suggestion is just a cheap polyfill pillow. The kind you can get and Bed Bath & Beyond of $12 or so. They’ll squish down when you lay on them and that’s pretty much it. They might collapse a little more overnight, but they won’t be flat like a down pillow and they’ll pop right back up as soon as you move your head.
FTR (in case you don’t know). Polyfill is sort of shiny stuff, kinda like fake cotton that they fill stuffed animals with.

When I have no idea what product to buy, I usually start with Amazon reviews. They led me to purchase this pillow about a year and a half ago (it was less than half this price at the time). I’m also a side-sleeper. This pillow was very comfortable. It’s still very comfortable, although it has gotten a little tamped down with time. I just added a thin pillow underneath it as a bolster, and I’m still very happy with it.

Not sure that I’d buy this pillow in your shoes now, since it’s gotten so pricey. But Amazon reviews, definitely would start there.

Sorry, correction: when I bought that pillow it was less than a QUARTER of the current price. I paid $45. It’s currently $200!

I tried a buckwheat pillow once before. I did not like it because it had no bounce. I move around a lot a night and a buckwheat pillow takes some effort to settle in one place.

I do not like memory foam for the same reason, because it takes too long to settle in.

Never tried an artificial fiber pillow. Might be worth a shot.

I have a latex foam pillow now. So far it’s the best I’ve tried. Maybe a “firm” version or different model of latex foam would work better?
