Many years ago, Mrs. Piper bought me a set of two wise men. They’re nice tubby little porcelain men, with candles inside them. The heads lift off to burn the candles, but we’ve never done that - just like them as they are.
So we’ve got Myrrh and Gold, but not Frankincense. The reason is that I saw them in the shop, mentioned that I liked them, and Mrs Piper contacted Piper Dad to go buy them the next day. Of course, by then someone had bought Frankincense. (What idiot only buys one out of a set?!?) So Piper Dad went ahead and bought them because the shop said they’d be getting more in.
Of course, the shop never did them back in, because Department 56 discontinued that line.
Seems to me that this is exactly the reason we’ve got us an interwebs - to find this type of knick-knack. I’ve looked on eBay, but I don’t really get eBay so gave up.
Can anyone give any suggestions on where I might look on-line?
woo-hoo! my third wise man arrived! (the Gold one, actually. when I reviewed the three pictures, I realised I had Frankincense and Myrrh, but not Gold).
I have lined up a Christmas present for Mrs. Piper in January - 11 months early! that’s a new record!
According to western European tradition, their names are Caspar (who brought frankincense), Melchior (who brought gold), and Balthasar (who brought myrhh). The original source, though, the Gospel of Matthew, doesn’t even say how many there were, much less their names.
Just remembered - I meant to post to this thread back in December, 2009 - Mrs Piper was very excited to get Wise Man # 3 - they’ve now made their appearances two years running and this year will be year # 3.
