We’re in the process of buying a Starwood timeshare on the resale market. We found it via this site. I’ve talked to the owner on the phone several times and she faxed over some documents to prove she owned it, blah blah. We negotiated a price and decided to go ahead with the transaction.
We are using this company as the facilitators of the exchange, which is the closing agents recommended by the original website. TransferMyTimeshare.com will handle the title search, escrow, etc. We are a few weeks into the process and it’s getting close to the time where I’m going to have to send them the $$ to put into escrow until the deed clears. They accept wire transfers or wire transfers. And that makes me nervous.
They seem legit, but is there any way I can know for sure? Is there an Online BBB? Or an investigation service that can do some basic fact checking so that I know I’m not transferring a substantial amount of money to a reputable US based company and not some Nigerian scammer?
I’m sorry, all of my comments would be not to buy a time share, sooo… I guess I got nothin’.

J, I hear you. My husband is a financial advisor and he’s instructed me not to tell anyone.
We’re paying far less (30%) resale than we would have from the developers and while it can’t be considered an investment, we’re comfortable that we’re not getting completely screwed. I’ve been renting condos in Maui for a few years and was frankly getting tired of it. It’s stressful to wonder whether the owners are reputable and/or if the place/beach was nice. Each year the rental price was increasing significantly. Last year we rented a great 2 bdrm condo for $329/night. Next year he’s asking $415/night! I know that my unit will be well maintained, on a nice beach with a nice pool, and that I’ll have a lanai overlooking the ocean. My needs are simple.
Plus the years we don’t want to go, we plan on letting our friends and family use it. It’ll be nice to be able to give back.
