I moved states, and some info got lost. Notably, my old checkbook from when I made the payment. The account with that bank has been closed 8 months at least. Can the IRS tell me what payments I have already made (I paid by check + form, not the new automated system)?
They can, but sometimes it’s not so easy to get the info. Since your accunt has been closed 8 months, it would seem your last two (at least) quaterly payments were made from a new account. Weren’t they all the same in size? One thing to do if you can’t get the number is estimate it and enter it. The IRS will check it (automatically) when they check your form and you will get a notice if you’re wrong either way.
The thing is, I only made one estimated payment (not cool, I know). I had a at-will 1099-Misc job & calculated the payment based on working for a full year, but then I stopped working after one quarter, got a w-2 job for a bit then went back to school fulltime. So, I don’t remember what I paid in my single estimated payment. Using deductive reasoning, it might have been $125, but I don’t think the IRS wants me to guess.
No the IRS doesn’t want you to guess, but it does want you to file a tax report. By Tuesday you must file or you must file a request for an extension. The request for the extension must be accompanined by a payment of your taxes in full. So assuming you can’t get the number by Tuesday, you’re going to have to guess one way or the other.
All I’m telling you is, the IRS will automatically check your form against teh information you have. If your previous payment was accompanied by yout SSN, they will compare it against what you report. Either way they will tell you in a letter that it doesn’t match. They are not going to penalize you (other than actually paying the tax plus interest) if you’re wrong, but make an honest effort.
Assuming you cannot get this information from your old bank, your only alternative is to ask for an extension and contact the IRS for the number. There is no way they will get this information to you in time to file before Tuesday. Currently they will be innnudated by questions.
