There was a print ad for Feeding America in People magazine recently featuring Dana Delany in a grey dress. You can see most of the dress at this web page down in the lower right corner. The photo shows most of the detail; aside from what’s shown, I can add that the hem line falls a few inches below the knee.
My wife fell in love with this dress (and I think she’d look fantastic in it), but I have absolutely no clue as to where I might find a copy, who the designer might be, or anything else. Aside from writing to Ms. Delany’s publicist, agent, or some such person, any clue as to how I might get some details? Anyone recognize the designer?
It’s probably an expensive dress so I would take the picture to local upscale stores and they might recognize it. Also post a link on fashion websites to see if anyone knows it.
You could try taking it to a tailor and see if they can re-create it. That would have the advantage of having it fit your wife perfectly. But I’m guessing it could be quite expensive. On the other hand, if it’s a designer dress, it’s probably pretty expensive anyway.
I see you live in Chicago… print out the webpage and take it to a Saks 5th avenue, or a Bloomingdales, or Nieman Marcus, in the woman’s designer clothing department. If one of the shopgirls there can’t help you, they can probably offer some plausible designers to look into!
I’ve found a number of pictures of her in this dress, and I think it’s a publicity picture for Desperate Housewives. So if you e-mailed them and asked the costume people, maybe they could help you.
Funny - if you’ll notice, this picture is the exact same pose as on the page I linked to (and in the print add). Looks like they took the photo, then 'shopped her into a kitchen setting for the ad.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. I have to head down Michigan Ave way later in the week, so I may just troll the high-end stores and see if someone can point me in the right direction. As for who dresses Ms. Delany, the only thing I’ve found so far is a reference to a dress from Desperate Housewives which was auctioned off for charity. It was a Dior, but I haven’t found the one I’m looking for in any Dior collections online.
It kind of looks like a Roland Mouret to me, but I can’t seem to find any matching images searching his name, so maybe not. Some of Donna Karan’s recent collection dresses are very similar as well. Net-a-porter is worth searching through although the prices are high end.
If that dress was obtained for her by the show’s costume designer, you might want to see if you can contact her - her name is Cate Adair. they get clothes from many sources for Desperate Housewives - anyplace from Payless Shoes to The Gap to high-end designers to thrift stores. Plus they customize a lot of the clothes once they get them, so you may be looking at a one-of-a-kind item there.
If you go to this fashion and accessory forum and to the subforum called “The Wardrobe”, you could probably post the exact OP there and get an answer. Yes, you’ll have to join, but the women (and men) there are very knowledgeable.
This one is more fashion-specific and has a subforum called “start style” but I just found it by Googling and know nothing about it.
Entertainment Weekly has a feature that answers exactly this type of question. I bet their website has a place to submit a question.
Also, feel free to post pictures of Dana Delany.
ETA: Found it - “Dying to find something you spotted on TV or in a movie? Send your wish list to Style Hunter at stylehunter@ew.com and we’ll see what we can find.”
Awhile back, I found a picture of a pair of boots worn by Sienna Miller that I fell in love with. I ended up locating a Sienna Miller fan website and posting the question to their forums. Less than a day later, I had my answer–the brand of boots, and where I could order them.
Fans are obsessive like that. They’re usually a great source of information.
In Style magazine also has such a feature as howye mentioned. You could ask them both and tell them they’re in a competition to see who gets the answer first.
