How can I (legally) get back at my jerk of an old landlord?

I’d quit wasting my time and energy on trying to get back at your old landlord and enjoy your new apartment. Life is just too short to spend your precious time “getting back” at someone.

I think that’s the best advice I’ve seen so far in this thread. Isn’t there something about living well being the best revenge?

Uh, she’s not.

As for a waste of time, if this guy is allowing unsafe conditions in the apartment building, I don’t think it’s a waste of time to report him to the proper authorities.

Just out of curiosity, RedRoses, is this apartment near USF? I’m asking because it sounds a bit like my brother’s apartment complex in Tampa (it took almost two weeks for his landlord to replace his non-functioning refrigerator).

I agree with everyone who says you should contact the local code enforcement agency. This page has contact info for several agencies throughout Florida. Check out the rest of the renter’s handbook, too. It gives pretty decent info about your rights and responsibilities.

Good luck!

If Red is near USF, it’s near the downtown campus in St. Pete. I looked for apartments there once, it seems pretty hit and miss. I almost spent $600 a month, utilities included for a studio apartment that was in an antique building. Clawfoot bathtubs, wood floors, nice porch. Near a Publix and CVS, just a few blocks from USF.

Then I moved to Largo and got my senses back. I’d rather live in a nice 2 bed, 2 bath apt that allows pets and commute then spend half my monthly income on rent.

Plus it’s nice that I’m not 2 blocks from the ghetto.

I’m also wondering what Shecky thinks he accomplished by running an A/C inside, and why he thinks it was a “fantastic idea.”

You know, Shecky, there’s an actual reason why all A/C units exhaust to an location (usually outside) that’s not connected to the space you’re trying to cool.

To clue you in if you really weren’t aware of this, realize that the heat given off by the back of the A/C unit always exceeds the cooling provided by the A/C unit. This is also why leaving your fridge open won’t cool your apartment off, either.

That’s not true if it was a swamp cooler, of course. (They cool by evaporation,
they work inside but then they raise the humidity)

FYI, there are a/c units made to run inside. They vent via a hose in the window. In the OP’s case, it may have been discreet enough to let him get away with running a 2nd air conditioner.

Here’s one I’m eyeing for my lake cottage

enough about my small a/c. Back to the OP.

RedRoses, can you still make anonymous calls to the health dept? Tell them all the violations listed here.

Yes, this is downtown St. Pete. I choose to live here because (aside from being my favoritest place in the world) I can walk or bike everywhere. To me, moving somewhere else in the city, or even in another city, would not make sense economically, unless it was like $150 cheaper. I used to get by with a tank of gas a month, and that was only if I went to other people’s houses instead of them coming to my place. I could actually sell my car and walk everywhere if I didn’t occasionally have to take classes in Tampa.

Anyhow, the reason I want to “get back” at this landlord is that the condition his building is in is terrible and unsafe, and he shouldn’t be allowed to take advantage of people. I don’t want to sue him, I’m done with dealing with him, but a phone call or meeting with someone from Code Enforcement or whatnot would be just fine.

I will certainly take advantage of the links and info you guys offered. Thanks for the help!

That’s exactly where this old apartment was. I thought it was a great location, I even bought a grocery cart so I could walk to Publix. I know exactly which apartments you’re talking about (Times Square Property Management?) and they are a little too pricey for me. Good job renovating the buildings, but too expensive.

Hahaha…good to see that I didn’t take it! I think we’re talking about the same building, on 5th and 3rd or something, weird painted buildings.

But yeah, that’s what discouraged me from living downtown. I am not interested really in walking everywhere since my friends mostly live up-county. I like the place I live now in Largo, It’s about $700 for a 2 bed, 2 bath gated community. I can have a cat. The gym is on-site and free. Are you a student at USF this summer? I’ll be there too, it seems like we should run into one another at some point.

Yeah I’m still not sure what my schedule will be, I might take an online class and one regular class. That’s probably all I’ll be able to manage, I might have to get a second job because I stupidly decided not to work for 3 months and now I am beyond broke.

I’m a history major, how about you?

And I knew exactly which sort of location you were talking about too. There are a lot of nice, new, crazy expensive condos butting up against these terrible rickety old shack looking things that I can’t believe haven’t collapsed inward on themselves. No offense  but I know what you’re talking about. I went to USF St Pete for 4 years and used to work downtown, but I’m glad I live up in the Park.

I’m sorry if this comes across as an advertisment, it’s not really intende to be. Instead it’s a request for content. This is exactly the sort of “landlord rant” that a site I was just involved in the set up of needs. It’s in the process of filling out the rants from people who hate their landlord. If you’re willing, I know this rant would be very very welcome!

Please consider posting it - the site’s at http://dontrentfrom.com
