How can you compare these two? Are you an idiot?

I would hope that necrophelia victims are rather rare.

You know, I’m a Christian and I’ve been on the receiving end of emotional abuse, some of it by Christians :(. I also own a button which read, “I found Jesus. He was behind the couch all along.” I would be put off by a t-shirt which showed Christ giving someone the finger, but it’s in nowhere near the same league as rearranging someone’s face.

Look, if “someone” brings this up again, here’s the difference to me. Rearranging someone’s face is personal. It requires direct, prolonged contact with one individual. A t-shirt is directed at the world in general. About the only way I’d have grounds for considering a t-shirt to be doing direct personal injury is if it read, “CJHoworth is a [fill in expletive or insult of your choice]!” Even then, I’d argue that the person would have to have known what to say to affect me worst and make a deliberate choice to do it.

Ye gods! Saying to someone, “You are an idiot!” is far more likely to be damaging than merely wearing a t-shirt, however rude or offensive someone may think it is. On the other hand, someone who compares a t-shirt to physical assault probably is an idiot.

Freedom of speech does not mean we can say whatever we like at any time. Even the Supreme COurt has made plenty of distinctions as to what is “protected” speach and what is not. Having said that, someone who goes around wearing a shirt that insults a certain demographic shouldn’t whine about his “rights” if they band together and call him on it. there is no “right” to be an asshole.

End of drive-by post. Have a nice day!

“there is no “right” to be an asshole.”

Is it illegal? Can you legally be prevented? If not, I’d consider that to be pretty much a “right”
