How close is a hotel to your house?

I live about 5 miles from the centre of a fairly touristy city of 50,000 people, there of loads of hotels in the city not even including the B&Bs and the like.

The nearest is a 4 star country hotel about a mile away from me.

There are two decent (not great) hotels about 5 miles away in one direction, and two others about 5 miles in the other direction. That’s pretty close, since practically nothing is closer than 5 miles to our house. We do have a VRBO about 200 feet from our front door, but they’re not renting it out much anymore. I can ask them to make an exception for you.

Or an even simpler reason, they don’t have an extra bedroom (or two, depending on how many guests.)

In the case of my husband’s aunt, not only do they have a very small house, but his uncle is well-along with Parkinson’s so they don’t need full-time guests. Plus, frankly, we needed time away from her. She’s a very sweet lady who talks and talks and talks and talks…

We have space for guests in our house, but for all I know, not everyone finds us to be charming and delightful company. Go figure…

BTW, when I mentioned creepy, I was thinking about a motel near the Navy base, so about 20 miles from me. When I had grand jury duty some years back, that place came up frequently in cases of drugs, prostitution, and violence. To me, that qualifies as creepy.

I forgot to mention: the nearest Buc-ee’s is only 25 miles south of here! :beaver:

There are a couple mid range motels 2 miles from me and a couple mid range hotels 5 miles from me. There used to be an independent conference center 1 mile from me that was supposedly a mid range hotel also, but I never saw anyone in the parking lot. Back when you could get good deals on hotel bidding sites, I hadn’t moved to my work yet, so I would occasionally try to bid $30 for a 2 star hotel to stay overnight so I didn’t have to commute that night, but I never scored a room despite there never being anyone staying at the hotel. So I got a bit of schadenfreude when it went under.

There is a Best Western Plus 1.7 miles away – not sure how nice it is, but it is fairly new.
I think there was a B&B in my city, but not anymore. There are a lot of places to stay about 5 miles from me (including a campground)

A hotel close to my home hosts the local blood drive — which I find convenient because I want as short a drive as I can get once I’m a pint low, which my wife kids me about because it’s not really that big a deal and you could easily cope with it and I suppose now you’ll say you don’t want to strain your ‘injured’ arm by taking out the trash while you’re ‘recuperating.’

It’s possible I live in a sitcom.

There are two mid range chain hotels within three miles of my house. I live in the Maryland suburbs of Washington DC.

There used to be a crummy motel ~1 mile from me, but it was renovated a few years ago and turned into studio apartments, probably as part of the push to create more affordable housing in California. You probably wouldn’t have wanted to stay there when it was a motel anyway.

There’s a nicer non-chain place roughly 2 miles away, in my town’s historic district, on the shore of Lake Natoma. There also used to be a cute little B&B in the historic district that was ever so slightly closer to me, but they appear to have closed.

If you’re looking for a chain, there are some of the usual suspects out by the freeway, maybe 3-4 miles away in the other direction – a Courtyard, a Hampton Inn, a couple others I can’t recall at moment.

I live in the suburban Bay Area. There are a couple of decent hotels about 1.5 miles from my house.

We don’t live far from the Texas Instruments headquarters and a nearby major facility, as well as near major freeways and a couple of large hospitals. So we’ve got a lot of options.

Here’s the table of what Gemini came up with at 1, 3,5 and 7 miles from my address:

Category 1 Mile 3 Miles 5 Miles 7 Miles
5-Star Hotels 0 0 0 1
4-Star Hotels 2 6 11 14
3-Star Hotels 4 14 26 35
2-Star Hotels/Motels 3 8 15 22
1-Star/Unrated & Extended Stay 5 9 11 13
Total Properties 14 37 63 85

There is a Courtyard By Marriot out my kitchen window to the east about 20 feet with a walkway leading to the Columbia River between the buildings, and a Residence Inn directly across the street to the south.

There is a Country Inn & Suites about a mile from my house.

I live within a few miles from an exit off I-55 in the outer Chicago suburbs so there’s a handful of economy chain hotels that I assume are all basically livable but I’ve never had reason to stay at them. I couldn’t even name them off the top of my head, just that there’s at least three generic corporate-owned places to lay your head for the night that are maybe a five minute drive to my house. I think they also opened a business suite extended stay joint as well but I doubt you’re visiting me for that long.

I live on the north side of Chicago. Anyone who actually visits me stays in an AirBnB; there are several nice options within a few blocks. Otherwise, within a couple miles there are a bunch of dubious motels that date from before the freeways were built, when this area was the main entry point for travelers arriving from the north and west. I don’t know anyone who has ever actually stayed in one but their reputations are not great. The nearest actual hotel options would be in the Wrigleyville area, about four miles away. Most hotels in Chicago are either downtown or near the airport, which are both about eight miles in opposite directions from my place.

In my mind @FairyChatMom needs no invitation. Don’t taunt FairyChatMom. If FairyChatMom begins to smoke, seek shelter and cover head.

When @FairyChatMom says she’s going to visit you, you take her up on her offer. She’s nice, damnit.

There are a couple of hotels about 5 miles away. There can be traffic in either direction. Google claims there are some air-B&Bs closer, but I’ve never checked them. I have a guest bedroom, and except for people with cat allergies, I usually put people up in my home. I like seeing my guests at breakfast, and they are often here for something other than just me, and spend a lot of the day either away or holed up in their room working remotely on a laptop.

Fear not. I have no intention of visiting, or stalking, as far as any of you know…
