how come mtv has to make good bands become mainstream

i think mtv should leave bands that come from the underground (such as hardcore metal bands and other tyes of music like it)alone. i was flipping through the channels and saw a video for glassjaw, and thought to myself why did they have to put that video on. now everybody is going to start liking them… if you have any thoughts on this please let me know.

They are simply a commercial enterprise trying to make as much money as possible. Remember, it’s the music industry. They have no real concerns beyond their bottom line. Many people getted duped into thinking commercial radio and TV have some altruistic ideals when it comes to the arts. Think of them as just another business and you’ll respect them less, but also fault them less.

Besides, I’m sure the majority of the underground bands would appreciate the nod from these outlets. They are most likely the ones who sent them the video in the first place.

Eh…just what is wrong with people liking some kind of music just because they heard it on MTV? I do not like many of the bands they showcase, that is true, but there are other bands and singers whose music I like and I wouldn’t be able to hear it if it wasn’t for MTV (or any other available music channel).

I was in a band that was once the darlings of the indie saddos. People who like bands only when they are known to a few afficiandos have no taste. Not bad taste, no taste. Their musical likes are as determined by others as those who like only what is in the top ten today. I strongly urge you to start making up your own mind.

Exactly - if a band didn’t want publicity, they more likely than not wouldn’t make videos.

I can understand the feelings of someone who was a fan of a band “before they were big”, but you need to be happy for them. If the band members don’t want that much exposure, they’ll stop making videos, they’ll stick with independent record labels and not go for a ton of PR hype, and so on. If they want to get the word out about their band in the mainstream and make more money for their efforts, be glad that more people are appreciating their work.

trust me i am happy for them, but i hate the people who go oh that band is awesome after they see them on mtv. for example, i listened to glassjaw for a year and half before they were put on tv, and no one knew who they were, and people said they sucked then when they saw the vdeo on mtv, the same people who said they sucked were like they are so cool. i think those people should be beaten for being like that. i am very happy that the newer bands are getting exposier. but why do people like to only listen to what is on the top 10 or whatever. can’t they go to web sites like cdnow or the music made me do it and look for bands they might not ever get to see on mtv. sorry if this sounds like a rant

Let me get this straight - you saw a VIDEO on MTV?!?

I didn’t know they still played them!

You must be a young’n.

Be glad that the band is doing well and just hope that they don’t get overplayed and that they don’t decide to change their sound in order to remain popular.

A lot of people do go to sites like CDNow or band/label sites to find new music. I have an entire set of favorites on my browser set for indie labels, official and unofficial band pages, and link sites.

I don’t think it’s a matter of people only liking what is in the top 10. I just think that many such people aren’t really music fans, and music isn’t very important to them. As a result, they just listen to what’s being played all the time. That’s not to say that people who like ANY popular music aren’t music fans, as I’m sure that there are some Britney Spears fans out there who are music fans (although I have never met one myself).

Just enjoy your music and don’t worry about the flavor of the month people.

Banger,
that is a very good point. i think i will just enjoy my music and give up on the flavor of the month people… have a nice day all.
