#$%&*(%!! How come no one told me K-Y kills sperm?!?

I just read this on the web. Traditional lubricants serious affect the motility of sperm and/or kill them. Granted, for the first several months we weren’t trying that hard to get pregnant - but I’ve been actively trying for 6 months. Now I’m taking Clomid. (First round so we’ll see.) But the WHOLE time we’ve been using K-Y!!! I have some dryness issues. Did everyone know this but me!!! I’m so annoyed. I just saw my doctor and got Clomid from her. Shouldn’t she have asked me if we use lubricant? Argh! Apparently there are sperm-friendly lubricants you can get. I’m annoyed. I’m 38. I wanted to have my second one by now. I can’t remember if we used lube when I got pregnant with my first one (had him at 36).

Are you taking your folic acid? Thats supposed to be important for older moms. Did your doc tell you about that?

Sorry - guess I forgot to mention it! Saliva is really bad too.

Things you can try using - baby oil (normally not a good idea since it degrades condoms but clearly that’s not an issue), olive oil or commercially prepared lubes like Preseed, Fertility Care or Conceive Plus. We preferred the latter as it was less sticky and seemed to stay slippery longer.

You could also try evening primrose oil to increase the amount of CM and regular Robitussin (without antihistamine) which helps to thin all forms of mucus.

Ummmmm… do you take the Robitussin in the traditional way , or do you use it as a lubricant ?

“A little from column A, a little from column B…”

I’m not sure I’d blame the ky for your problems conceiving. While it certainly doesn’t help other factors could be at play here like your age.
I got pregnant while using condoms with spermicide.
Good Luck!

Sorry! I’ve been making sure I tell this to everyone I meet, but there are a lot of people in the world, and I just haven’t gotten to you yet. Please be patient.

I did in fact know this somehow, though I’ve certainly never tried to get pregnant. It could be a contributing factor, it could not. If you’re using loads of KY, it probably is.

It’s still been less than a year of trying, right? Which isn’t unusual. With Clomid and Preseed (the sperm-friendly lube I’m always hearing about), you’ll be pregnant with twins in no time. Good luck!

People still use KY?

Dude. Astroglide.

In the comments some people mention lubricants meant for people trying to get pregnant.

Yes but she is 38. If older than 35 you should see a Dr. after 6 months of no success.

Anything on the KY label about this?

Those of you who neglected to tell me, I forgive you, but only because you apologized.

No, there is nothing on the label. Probably so people don’t take it the wrong way and try to use it as a contraceptive. I am not taking folic acid either, but perhaps I will start. Only seen my doc once re the fertility issue - as another poster said, I’m over 35 hence I went in once we had been trying for 6 months. Actually it’s been longer, anyway. Now to find this Pre-Seed stuff.

I knew about K-Y and we used Preseed instead. It works just as well. I’m sort of shocked you aren’t taking folic acid. Its pretty much THE main thing you do when trying to conceive and I thought it was common knowledge that you need to be taking it. Are you taking a prenatal?

Also, can I ask if you’ve had any blood tests on cycle day 3 and/or 21? Are you being monitored with the Clomid?

I guess I have been in some denial about not getting pregnant so I have not done enough reading. That’s my excuse about the folic acid. I am taking it now, since I went to the drugstore after I read your post, thanks. I am taking prenatals. And I am being monitored on the Clomid. I will have a blood test on Day 21 and I had one on Day 3.

tesseract,
You also might want to look at your ovulation cycle as well. There are times during that cycle when you are more likely to get pregnant, and times when you are less likely. You can try searching Google for “NFP” and “Natural Family Planning” to find more info. There are at least 3 different methods of this that I know of, but they are all rooted in the same basic method.

Crisco also works dandily, and makes your baby come out smelling like freshly-baked cookies.

Only if you use “butter flavor” snort

I’m also amazed anyone uses K-Y at all, when you can buy Astroglide at any Target or drugstore (ie, it is a not a niche lubricating product). Eek, KY is disgusting.

KY, however, is great for sticking little fabric bows on bald babies’ heads.
