I work in a small shop and we bring our dogs to work. There are three (lab, beagle and boston terrier) and at least one will have a seizure once a month.
Unlike many owners we’re around our dogs all day, so perhaps everyone else’s dog has seizures this often they just don’t know about it.
On the other hand, we have some nasty chemicals here too, can they trigger seizures?
I dunno how common it is, but I had a Boston who developed a seizure disorder in the last few years of her life. There are meds you can give to control them.
Have you taken any of these dogs to a vet? Are you aware that all seizures cause some degree of brain damage?
Rather than expect Dopers to try to diagnose your dogs over the internet, why not take one or three to the vet and have, you know, someone who does this for a living try to figure it out?
I had a pug who seizured now and then, and the vet I took her to said that dogs who seizure occasionally are as common as dogs with unexplained itchy skin.
I don’t think seizures are that common. It could be the breeding. I agree, the vet. In some cases, the cause can be determined and even controlled. Other times the vets shrug their shoulders.
Just verifying you’re saying all three dogs have seizures? That’s really unusual. I’ve been a vet tech for 10 years, doing shelter and ER work. We see plenty of epileptic animals, dogs far more than cats, but three unrelated dogs from three different households all having an occasional seizure in a common workplace? Really weird, IMO.
Sounds like it could be environmental, but I have no idea what would be so toxic as to cause occasional seizures with no other symptoms.
If you’re in a workplace that has many chemicals, I might check through the MSDS book, which lists toxic reactions to watch for with each chemical. It might not be entirely appropriate for the difference between people and dogs, but it’s a place to start.
I had a lab mix that had occasional seizures. As she got older they became more frequent. These usually happened when sleeping. Her doctor didn’t find it to be that unusual.
Agree with this…IANAV but have owned and fostered well over 100 dogs and am basically a crazy dog lady - seizures are not really that common. For all three dogs to have seizures? Definitely weird. I’ve never cared for or owned a dog that had any type of seizure, although I had an epileptic cat once.
What are the seizures like? There’s different types.
If any dog in my care had more than one seizure-type episode, I’d be at the vet yesterday.
