How concerned are you about this Coronavirus?

It is quoted in the post. It’s also the headline of the article.

What, you can’t fucking read now?

Here are some other sources just in case your illiteracy only applies to CNN:

Larry Kudlow claims coronavirus “relatively contained”.

Kudlow breaks with CDC on coronvirus: “We have contained this.”

Kudlow says the outbreak of the coronavirus will not be widepread.

But interestingly, he does say this: “With respect to Seattle, that would be a place you would avoid for now. And (California) Gov. Newsom declaring California an emergency state, especially Northern California, I understand that. Avoid it. Exercise common sense. But the rest of the country is not suffering from those kinds of breakouts, at least not yet."

So if you live in Seattle or in California, would it be “common sense” for you to self-quarantine? If it is common sense for you to stay away from these ginomorous places, would it not also be common sense to evacuate them?

We don’t know if there are other places with outbreaks because we haven’t done enough testing. It is irresponsible for him to say “exercise common sense” when we don’t know what our risk is. And that’s not the people’s fault. It’s government’s fault for not having its act together.

It is irresponsible for the WH to allow the top economic advisory to be weighing in on this topic the way he has been.

Yes, I can read. You posted a link without a quote and then went on a bit of a rant.

so don’t exercise common sense and panic?

It’s a reasonable bet that you have no intentions of having Trump’s baby but what do you expect from a virus that was kept hidden from the public by China for at least a month until it spread? Do you think there’s a warehouse somewhere with unknown virus vaccines and/or tests for it? It takes time to ramp up.

Just reading through your cited source there have bee about 6000 tests so far which would be 3000 people since they take 2 swab tests at a time. We currently have the ability for 75,000 tests and that number is expected to rise dramatically in the next week as they ramp up. We have about 400 cases in the entire country so hopefully we can stay ahead of needed test kits.

It will be dealt with as it moves around the country and quarantines will be set up as needed. We’re doing that now. My state has already started restricting public events and we don’t have any known cases. That would be the exercising common sense part. States with concentrations of known cases will engage in more restrictions.

Magiver, President Covfefe-19 has been lying for weeks about this. If you are not seeing this, then I suggest you change your news sources.

We have had two months to “ramp up”. As soon as the outbreak in China became known, we should have been ordering these magical “1 million kits” that we were promised yesterday. It this were Ebola we were talking about, thousands of us would be dead right now. It’s pathetic.

But I actually don’'t care about the lack of testing as much as I care about the lack of responsibility and discipline in messaging. Saying “There’s no outbreak in the US! Stop worrying!” only makes sense when you’ve done widespread testing. It would only responsible for Trump to call the official mortality rate of 3.4% “false” after he’s gone through the trouble of ensuring every American with symptoms has been tested. He doesn’t get to play the “Who could have guess the coronavirus be so hard?” card while also acting like he knows more than the experts. It just doesn’t work that way. It’s a shame you don’t understand this.

And “exercise common sense” is also irresponsible messaging. If common sense were sufficient, we wouldn’t have a global pandemic right now. For millions of people, it is common sense to keep going to work regardless of how much snot they are slinging because if they don’t go, they will be fired. For others, it is common sense to hoard all the toilet paper from Costco if that’s what they see everyone else doing. Lots of people think it is silly to self-isolate over some “mild symptoms” and are thus exercising the “common sense” to not do so. Common sense is a myth.

A facemask study using mannequin’s and artificial sneezing, 35nm particles:

Coronavirus about 125nm according to https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/coronavirus-pollution-masks-n95-surgical-mask/

Summary for when mask is not sealed and basically worn like average person (see Figure 7):
30cm distance after 2 seconds of activity, 30% effective.
60cm distance after 2 seconds of activity, 90% effective.

Incorrect.

We have 400 cases that we know about. Given what is known about this virus, and how it’s popping up all over without clear paths of transmission, it’s pretty certain there are thousands of cases we are don’t know about.

It’s too late for quarantines.

Oh, they’ll have some use, they’ll slow it down in some places, but there’s no way in hell this is contained or will be in the near future. The cat is out of the bag, the horse is out of the barn. And because the administration you worship is dragging its feet and refusing to test more people and get a REAL grasp of the problem there will be much suffering and deaths that might have otherwise been avoided.

order the kits from where? they have to be developed ahead of time along with the vaccines (if they can even make a good vaccine). I’ve already posted the kits available now and the number of people affected. The kits are going to be ramped up quickly and distributed as the outbreaks dictate.

I understand the need to hate Trump because there isn’t a legitimate candidate who could do better with the economy or trade issues. It’s a shame he talked Mexico into turning away the caravans of people into the US. That would have been a swell addition to the influx of possible carriers of the virus.

If you’re worried about it and common sense approaches aren’t on your horizon then consider a relaxing cruise somewhere. They’re probably a lot of discounted trips available. Or you could go about your day and stop listening to CNN’s bias of all things Trump.

The Trump administration’s decision to forgo a World Health Organization test and create its own had fateful consequences, experts say.

The ship has sailed on quarantining people en mass, ala Wuhan. At least not without a lot of force. The president and has minions have done everything possible to convince Americans that this is all a hoax, a big ball of nothing. I mentioned not knowing how to talk to my friend about this virus up-thread (or it might have been the other thread in MPSIMS). I finally did and we got into an argument. Guess what she kept parroting back at me. “WE HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT BECAUSE IT’S NO WORSE THAN THE FLU!” Do you really think a person like this is going to willingly self-isolate themselves for weeks on end?

I think local governments are going to do what they can to isolate patients who are sick enough to require hospitalization. But that’s going to be it for quarantining

Magiver, you’ve been too busy bleating “China sucks!” to notice that your own government is not winning any awards in emergency response management. Instead of lobbing insults at me, why don’t you start scrutinizing the people you elected? Hold them accountable, just this one time.

the people on the Grand Princess need to be updated on this.

There is no indication that any feet dragging is taking place. I don’t worship any politician, least of all Trump.

The money is in place and the kits are in production. It’s not like they’re Amazon products. They have to be developed.

I am not terribly concerned for myself - I’m not that old, and am basically pretty healthy. Same for my wife. It would suck to contract it, but odds are it’d be mild, or at worst just really unpleasant.
I am a bit concerned about an intended trip to the States to visit family toward the end of July, and whether there will be some sort of quarantines or restrictions preventing it. We’ll see.

Somehow South Korea was able to test 160,000 people while we (the US) were approaching 500. They are still testing over 10,000 a day.

I’m with monstro. The US is inexcusably behind the curve in terms of testing capacity and also practical messaging.

Compare to S Korea. They have been testing thousands for weeks, and while it is bad there they seem to be managing it ok…? Let’s just say they are a good model for testing. Hong Kong, right in the neighborhood, got on it early with aggressive quarantines and does not have a major outbreak.

In the US? An apparently mentally ill old guy is pushing a national message designed to burnish his public image. When presidents lie, people die.

They need to be brought to land for proper screening, treatment for anyone sick, and quarantine in quarters that AREN’T going to result in more illness for the rest of them. And fuck what it makes Trump’s “numbers” look like. You did listen to that quote of him saying Americans should just sit in a boat at sea rather than make him, Trump, look bad, correct?

Then why do so many other countries have so many and we have so few?

It’s pointless to argue with you because you’re not looking at facts or listening to reason. You’ll be backing Trump & Company up until the time you’re carted away in an ambulance gasping for breath with every cough.

The biggest development that’s affected me, personally, was that a lot of really, really worried people have been stocking up on supplies. And where does one go when one needs large quantities of supplies in a pinch? Why, the friendly local wholesaler, of course. Preferably before it gets completely cleaned out. While I was shopping at Sam’s Club today, I noticed how incredibly depleted some of the aisles were. There were 10 Chef Boyardee variety packs remaining, the very bottom layer of Nutter Butters, 2 boxes of frozen chicken sandwiches, and maybe one-fifth of the bottled water. Some brands of staple items, like rice, beans, and noodles, were flat-out gone. The weirdest thing was an incredible run on toilet paper, to the point where you couldn’t find any anywhere until about a week ago, for which I can only assume that a great many citizens were afraid that the stress over this virus would give them massive, raging diarrhea. Having dealt with said ailment on far more occasions than I care to remember, including a couple of recent episodes which cost me two pairs of underwear and nearly an entire day of work, I find the notion that it’s somehow possible to be freaking prepared for this as laughable as that ridiculous old wives’ tale about taking pork over the Pali causing a fully operational vehicle to suddenly develop catastrophic engine failure. But then, we’ve never been the model of reason when it comes to would-be disasters. I mean, see what happens every time there’s a hurricane warning, and people are running around all worried and stocking up on water and taping up windows and filling gas cans and this and that. Guys…listen to me. What will happen is that it is going to get incredibly freaking humid for a few days. That is it. “Hurricane preparedness” means making sure your air conditioner still works. All right? All right.

Um, where was I…oh yeah. Concerned? Other than making shopping at certain venues more of a hassle, not very. Aside from the fact that there isn’t really anything I can do other than the obvious (and trust me, nobody in my family washes my hands more than me!)…well, I’ve been sick as a dog many times in my life, and given what I know, how would I even tell if I or someone I knew had this particular virus? There was one time I had a nasty case of bronchitis, and I didn’t know about it for weeks because it sounded exactly like every bad cold I ever had.

Is there any reason to believe this virus is deadlier than, say, the flu, or pneumonia, or dysentery? If not, I don’t see the point of wearing a mask everywhere. My breath isn’t that bad.

No.

It means getting yourself a generator if electricity is a matter of life-and-death for you. For instance, if you or a loved one are on oxygen or have medication that must be refrigerated.

It means getting some food and emergency supplies together just in case the storm shuts down the whole town, as it can do if it is bad enough. Otherwise you might have to turn to looting just to make sure your kids don’t go hungry.

It means filling up your gas tank now rather than waiting until the storm knocks out power and everyone has to wait for hours at the only gas station that is open for business.

It means getting your boat out of the water and tying that bad boy down.

It means getting your ass out of low lying areas, especially when the government tells you that you’re on your own if you decide to stay.

People who think you can’t do anything to prepare for a hurricane have never been in one. They are clowns who shouldn’t be listened to.

What specifically should we eat in order to better support our immune system?
