I searched the engine and saw no threads of this. Anyone know how he did it? I’m talking about that famous show he did where he flew around at the end, including going inside an enclosed box and flying. Very smooth and nice. How did he do this?
Flying’s easy. The big mystery is how he hooked up with Claudia Schiffer :D.
Two words: Pixie Dust.
Ah, where’s the Masked Magician when you need him?
::sigh:: Must I explain everything?
Flying is easy. You just throw yourself at the ground, and miss.
Gunslinger has obviously read “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”
How did Copperfield appear to fly?
he used camera tricks.
Aw, flying is easy. What I want to know, is how did he manage to get that thin little black line to always stay exactly vertical over his center of gravity? And what was that, anyway?
What?
I wondered this myself a couple months ago. While I will not provide a direct link, the device he used is patented. It is a matter of public record. Do a search of US patents for “levitation device”.
It looked cool but it was obvious to me he was using some kind of line.
Watch it again, if you can. When they “passed” him through the rings they did it in such a way that he never really went through them. It just looked that way.
The same with the box. IIRC when they closed it, the lid went between the lines but never actually crossed them. The box probably had some kind of slots to allow the lines through.
Just as long as the asnwer isn’t as lame as the answer to “How did he make the Statue of Liberty disappear?”
Actually, he didn’t fly – he just made an illusion that he was flying.
What - are you saying that he didn’t make the statue of Liberty disappear ?
Oh man ! Say it ain’t so…
Boo hoo
I had the privelage of talking to a rather drunk magician the other night, i guess the alcohol loosened his lips…
I remember reading an ariticle awhile back about Fiona Apple. She was talking about he boyfriend (a magician). She said on their first date they were walking down the sidewalk and all of a sudden he started walking up in the air as if he was walking up a set of invisible stairs and then walked right back down. Well, i asked him how the hell he did this and he said you could go to any magic store and pay $45 for that trick but he wouldnt tell me what it was. Then he proceded to tell me how David Cop-a-feel made the statue of liberty dissapear and how he walked through the great wall of china. They were both seemed like rather cheap ways of doing it ( i guess thats why they call them “tricks”) so i lost intrest. Anyway, the moral of this story is that however Fiona Apples boyfriend did it is probably the same way Dave did it, just go to a magic store and ask around. If anyone knows how he did it though please post it, magic is a great way to pick up chicks
Isn’t Fiona’s boyfriend David Blaine? He’s pretty neat, he did a card trick on TV once where he guessed the card I picked at home.
yea thats the guy. I hate those card tricks though, if you do it right then theres only 1 card you can come up with so its cheesy.
One of the promos for his new (?) show says he’ll transport you anywhere in the world you want to go. Anybody seen this show and hazard a guess as to how he does it?
It’s probably some lame thing like, “Through the magic of TV we will transport you…” or “Using your imagination, you will be magically transported…”

Cisco, most magicians I’ve talked to don’t think too highly of Mr. Blaine. He used camera edits to show only the best reactions to the stuff he did. Each illusion he performed on his specials was probably performed 20 or 30 times before he got the right reaction.

You really want to know, well gee, that takes all the fun outta it!
I figured it out myself after I saw him fly for the second time and had one of Copperfield’s former stagehands, an aquaintance when I lived in Cali, tell me about it. Then again I used to be part of the IBM (International Brotherhood of Magicians). In the magic world, Copperfield’s flying is kinda a joke, but anyways here’s how he does it:
It’s pretty simple, he wears a harness under his clothing, he has on throughout the show. Two clear lines that can hold a couple hundred lbs. each, attach to both sides of his waist to the harness (I forget the exact material of which the lines are made of). The backround and lighting during the flying scene mask the lines–no matter how hard you look you will not see them (this is something known as black art). Anyways, there is a (expensive, computerized) machine above the stage–think of a versitile-mini-crane (outside of the audience’s view). The machine is programmed for a specific routine and is manually controlled for certain parts. Copperfield spent a couple years practicing and choreographing the flying stunt before he did it live–to make it fluid and convincing (with all the movements, balance and control). He couldn’t fly for shit at first, his muscles couldn’t take it, but after lots of practice he’s got it down really good and it does look pretty convincing.
So that’s it, I once went to one of his shows where the stage did not have the overhead space (most do) for the flying rig, so he didn’t do his flying act.
If you see him live he has 2 people come up from the audience (usually a couple), for the flying scene, these are plants. Near the end of the scene he picks up the woman and takes her up some 20ft. above the stage. Due to insurance reasons, he has to pay this woman about $600 every time he takes her up.
Hope that helps

So where’s my 45 bucks!?!
