How did I get Symantec Endpoint Protection automatically installed on my laptop?!

I’m crazy, but not so crazy as to do things without remembering them. I just noticed an icon for Symantec Endpoint Protection in the icon tray, but I can’t find it in my list of programs under “Add or Remove Programs.” I am 100% sure I didn’t install this, and no one has access to my machine but me. The only thing I’ve done in the last few days was run a Windows Update, but my Google-fu hasn’t turned up anyone mentioning that the Symantec program was part of the update package.

Has this happened to anyone else? What might cause this? Is this a sure sign that I’ve been hacked or something?

I’m using a Dell laptop running XP SP3, by the way.

If it’s a corporate machine IT can often install modules remotely over the network for stuff they want monitored like virus protection. Endpoint is a corporate/enterprise AV application.

It’s not a corporate machine, although I do have VPN access. I wasn’t connected to the VPN at the time when I noticed the icon, however.

Now that I"ve restarted my computer, the icon is gone. This is weird.
