How Did Janet Napolitano Get her Job?

Hey, she’s one step closer to reality than most Arizonans, who think the 9/11 terrorists came in through Mexico.

As an Arizona resident, I think that she was selected because she is a very able administrator. She is also very familiar with the issues concerning the border with Mexico.

Secretary of Homeland Security

American cabinet members not knowing much about Canada is par for the course.

You don’t really have to know anything about Canada to know something about the 9/11 hijackings. Look at it this way; I don’t really know anything about Mexico, but I know the 9/11 hijackers didn’t come from there. 9/11 is sort of the defining moment in American military current affairs; not knowing where the hijackers came from is the present-day equivalent of a politician in 1944 thinking the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, a la Bluto in “Animal House.”

The word from various sources is that Napolitano’s (and thus, the Administration’s) intent here isn’t to pretend the 9/11 perpetrators were based in Canada, as the odd fool will claim, but to manufacture pretext for trade protectionism. What NAFTA will not allow, “national security” measures can. It’s just the beginning of protectionism under the guise of security. I don’t know that this is true, but it’s logically possible.

Hint: what do Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols, and Eric Rudolph all have in common?

I have no idea where the hijackers came from, if by that you mean what their point of entry into the country was. Why am I supposed to know this?

I did grade a paper once, written by a college student, which ended with the line “Persistance is the key. That’s why we won against the Vietnamese at Pearl Harbor.”

I. Shit. You. Not.

Let’s see:
Tiny Tim
Saint Nicholas
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer.
CHRISTMAS?

The paper I can believe.

I was being flippant, but RickJay is right. 9/11 is defining moment for current American foreign and domestic policy. Everything from FEMA being rolled under Homeland Security to how Americans (and others using American framing) justify their diplomatic and military operations. Not knowing that the INS let these guys in; that American flight schools instructed some of them; that US airports allowed them on planes and that months later the INS then issued some a VISA extension shows either a distinct lack of concern with what actually happened by the Secretary or a subtle distortion to further other agendas.

I’ve heard protection against terrorist infiltration presented, more than once, as a reason we need to build the wall on the Mexican border.

Well-played, sir.

Why are you dragging such irrelevancies as facts and experience into this discussion, when there are perfectly good talking points and conspiracy theories to explain everything? Her selection couldn’t possibly be for such straightforward and sensible reasons!

What—more change? They switched her job already? :smack:

Thank you.

Wow, who’da thunk the Canadians would be so sensitive about this?

Now for all you right wingers slamming Janet, it’s a good thing Senator McCain didn’t win the Presidency, isn’t it?

Beware now, that link is from the ultra left wing website Fox News…

I swear. I think Napolitano and McCain have mistaken Maine for a Canadian province. Not that it’s not close to that, but we still are one of the United States.

We’re sensitive about this because any accusation that the 9/11 perps entered the US through Canada is inevitably followed by calls for the border to be tightened, which would kneecap our economy(1/3 of Canadian GDP comes from exports to the US).

Hehehe, as an American, I should be all up in your face at the insinuation that we would “kneecap” your economy. Probably you assert this because you think it’s all the higher we can reach! :stuck_out_tongue:

I love how the right freaks out, demands and gets an apology from Napolitano for stating, correctly, that veterans may merely be targets for recruitment by right-wing extremists, but saying outright that the current administration is “filled with far-left extremists” is valid commentary.
