I was reading comics, and came across Krypto, the super dog. Herself was in the room, and i casually asked, “Hey boo, do you know the name of supermans dog?” Without any thought, she just replied “Krypto” and went on to read her magazine, leaving me dumbfounded. See, she’s never read a comic in her life. I would consider Krypto one of the more obscure, unknown elements of the Superman mythos… to my knowledge he’s never appeared on the tv show or cartoon or any of the movies… Yet how would my comic-phobic girlfriend know his name so casually? Is it me? Is he better known than I give him credit for?
Well, geez, isn’t it obvious? Duh.
Possibly, the writers for Superman aren’t quite as creative as we’d like to think. “Krypto” is a pretty obvious guess for the name of Superman’s dog. Although come to think of it, despite the large number of dog owners from the planet Earth, “Ear” is a pretty uncommon name for a domesticated canine.
Krypto has his own show these days.
I don’t watch Smallville, but I think that the teenage Clark Kent on that show had or has a dog called Krypto.
I’ve never read a Superman comic in my life. Matter of fact, never even saw the movies.
Yet, I knew his dog’s name was Krypto, as well, as soon as I read the thread title.
Maybe we learned through osmosis, by sleeping next to someone who knew the answer?
Seriously, though, like much trivia, could be something she heard on television once or twice, and without realising it, held on to the information. Maybe?
Afterthought:
Or, or, maybe, does she play any trivia games? Maybe it was the answer to a Trivial Pursuits question that she got wrong - I learn a lot of things that way, myself. When you get something wrong the first time, you do your best to remember the answer next time…
I suppose if the dog had had a more ordinary name, like “Jim”, it would less memorable.
What was Krypto called by young Clark when not in super-dog mode? Now that’s a trivia question.
Yeah, but who knows the name of the Super Monkey off the top of your head?
No cheating!
Beppo the Super Monkey
Well, what about the horse and cat?
And the fifth member of the Legion of Super-Pets?
Horse Comet - not from Krypton. Centaur under enchantment from Circe
Cat Streaky - not from Krypton. Ordinary earth cat who found Kryptonite X in Supergirl’s ball of yarn.
I could have a few details wrong, I’ll admit.
The Legion of Superpets were
Streaky the Supercat (Supergirl’s pet), Krypto the Superdog (Superman’s pet), Comet the Superhorse (Had a slightly freaky relationship with Supergirl), Beppo the Supermonkey (Er…I have no idea what his deal was), and Proty II (sort of technically the pet of Chameleon Boy, but every bit the full sentient as anyone in the human Legion - and he got pretty shirty about that later.)

No, she knew the answer, plain as day. She didnt even have to think. And I know if I were to ask her what was the name of Clark Kents photographer buddy (Jimmy Olsen) she wouldnt have a clue. It got me thinking that Krypto is some really well known character that I didnt realise was so popular.
Then I said that she must have heard me say it sometime, at which point she got really pissed off and refused to tell me how she knew.
Women.
Crud…hit the wrong custom tag…that should have been [spoiler] not <center.> >_<
Don’t forget Centron, the Balance-Hippo.
But only the most pathetic geeks remember the
Space Canine Patrol Agency!
That’s what I meant - you don’t necessarily have to think about it if you “just know”.
Yeah. We prefer to remain enigmas.
Only real fans know the name of Power Girl’s cat.
My first exposure to Krypto was either when he tried to take a bite out of Supergirl in Batman/Superman or when he showed up on Smallville. I never heard of him before then.
Beppo was a stowaway on Baby Kal-El’s rocket to Earth.
Paw Pooch, Chameon Collie, Hot Dog, yea I’m a geek.
I even know that Krypto didn’t originally reveal his identity or his entire powers to them. He only told them he could fly and went by the name Air-Dale.
Now everybody sing…
"there was a dog from outer space
and Krypto was his name-o
K-R-Y-P-TO
K-R-Y-P-TO
K-R-Y-P-TO
And Krypto was his name o"
He was in some old Hanna-Barbera Superboy cartoon. I don’t remember too much about it except that we wore it out by watching the tape too much, and it shared a video with a few Tom and Jerry shorts.
Any time there’s a public mention of Superman, whether it’s an article about the movie or some sort of anniversery (I remember the 50th making the 6 o’clock) they always mention the wacky pets, and Krypto’s got a unique enough name it’s probably stuck in the public unconciousness.
