How Did This Happen [Question about playing MP3 files]

On a site which opened MP3 files, previously it would simply download them but now (very recently) the site simply plays the file on the Internet.

Obviously someone changed the coding on the web page. Why is another question. Copyright issues, perhaps?

Have you tried right-clicking and selecting “Save as…” or “Save Link as…”?

They caught on that your thread title wasn’t descriptive?

If there’s not a note about it somewhere, I’d guess copyright. Mind mentioning which site?

Yea, I’m guessing they just changed the default option, and you can get it to play either way by right-clicking.

I assume they get in some degree of trouble for doing it the previous way and changed it to get around that. The MP3 format does not automatically mean that illegal content is being shared but that is what it is commonly used for. I am sure you can see the issue with having a site that let’s you download a full MP3 file of whatever you want for free. It messes with the music industry among others.

Youtube, one of the largest sites on the internet owned by Google, will let you listen to just about any music but they don’t give an obvious way to download it permanently. That is trivially easy to do as well if you want to but putting that small roadblock in place seems to be the line between allowed and not allowed these days.

Could have been that you updated Quicktime or something and now your browser is set to just open and play the file instead of giving you a save dialogue. If the URL ends in .mp3, you can go to File->Save As and still save it the same way.

Well that does work, although it is no longer the default.

Though as an aside I hope you don’t think I’m a National Socialist befcause of this…

Do you really think things on the internet are “frozen”?

It is very odd for an old website like that to suddenly change, especially without notice.

In fact, based on what happened when I went there, I don’t think they did change anything. It seems like he previously didn’t have a plugin for the MP3s, and now does.

Qin, did you or someone else who uses your computer install some new software since you last visited the site?

Not that I know of…I’ll have to ask them. Thanks

Edited thread title for clarity.
