How did you get your username?

I’m sure there have been many new posters since the last thread of this sort, so I’m making another one.

Mine is a semi-long and complicated tale: I first used this username at the Motley Fool, where I first tried ‘gandalf’ and failed. I wanted a LotR name for some reason, but this is actually from the Hobbit… After that, I eventually got back onto the Dope and signed in as dwalin, which I do as much as possible these days.

So, how’d you get yours?

(I’d particularly like to hear from Coldfire and Eutychus, since I cannot imagine how they could have gotten their names)

I was in band in high school. At the spring concert my freshman year, we performed “Siegfried’s Death and Funeral March” from the Wagner opera Die Gotterdammerung. It’s one of my favorite pieces; it led me to do some light reading on Norse mythology and the Der Nibelungenlied (I believe that’s what it’s called).

Flash forward to my freshman year of college. The floor that I lived on in the dorms had a bunch of people who played Command & Conquer Red Alert over the network. I got hooked and chose “Siegfried” as my player name. Soon, I got ICQ and picked “Siegfried” as my handle. It just grew from there as I got further involved in Internet communities.

I am Her Divine Shadow. I don’t post a lot, but this is my favourite message board. You all have made my day with your wit and silliness.

It’s a mix of the 7 Up commercials, and French class in high school. In grade 10 French class, there was a section where we were discussing adverisements and slogans. My French teacher was asking around, in English, which slogans we were familar with, and there was a chatter throughout the class. Then, a kid behind me said “Make 7 Up YOURS!”. The teacher must have misheard, because she looked appalled, and said “PARDONEZ MOI?!” The whole class just cracked up at the teacher’s reaction, and the poor kid had to repeat himself. After the laughter siezed, the teacher said, simply “I actually thought you said 7 Up Yours”

And THAT is how I got my name…

I first checked out the SDMB because I was trying to check the veracity of some “fact” or other; I don’t remember what it was. So “skeptic” seemed appropriate. And “ev” is the first syllable in my first name.

I think I’m going to change my username, though.

I typed it into the “Username” box when I registered. How else can you get a username?
Lame jokes aside, I’m tall and gangly and have thus always felt a natural affinity for giraffes and great danes. I figured I’d leave “Great Dane” for a really good Danish person to use.

Don’t they just! There some razor wits on this board!
Oh… mine’s a Jimi Hendrix song.

Mine’s easy!

I lurked for a while, did said lurking from work.

**7 up yours[/b, I wondered where your username came from and now i know.

I have an affinity for rotary engines, so my username is an obscure reference to the geometry of a Wankel rotary engine housing.

7 up yours, I wondered where your username came from and now i know.

Der! Maybe I should lurk some more so i don’t muck up boldings in future.

Giraffe, do you have spots to?

i’m a bass player, and i do a lot of slap-n-pop style stuff at times. someone called me a plankspanker, and it just stuck in my head. that and i wanted a change from ‘barndawe’…

Wow, it’s like you know me! I figured I could always use Tall and Blotchy if Giraffe happened to be taken.

I don’t like to run.

Plankspanker, Very nice username! I’ve heard that description before but didn’t make the connection. I’m a Bass player to, do you get hellish calluses in weird places on your hands…from the guitar that is.

Giraffe are you a reticulated, maasi or rothschilds Tall and Blotchy creature?

I took my name form my favorite Eletric Light Orchestra album, Out of the Blue.

Other ELO-based options I considered:

Mister Kingdom

Mister Radio (could’ve been misleading as I’m not in the radio biz)

Horace Wimp - the potential for being ragged on prevented this

Idle Racer - homage to a the band Jeff Lynne was in before he joined The Move, but could also have been misleading

A saltire is an X-shape on a coat of arms, like the prominent blue part of the Confederate Battle flag, or the Crosses of Sts. Andrew and Patrick in the Union Jack (I know, those are vexilology, not heraldry, but they use the same ordinaries, and are more widely known). I was once a rabid heraldry hobbiest.

I am as Sybly Whyte made me. Of course he was but the instrument of Kimball Kinnison. Kinnison was the agent of the late, great Doctor of Baked Goods, “QVOD SVBIGO FARINAM”, Smith!

That should clarify.

Robert Heinlein’s Maureen, from To Sail Beyond the Sunset.

Bootsy?

I wanted a semi-anonymous yahoo email so that some of my students could ask me questions about their assignments during the holidays. J is my first initial. sum1 is (I hope) obvious but with some good mathematical overtones. I added the underscore because the version without was taken and also I think it has saved me from spam.
j_sum1 has become my handle for quite a few things over the years and was the obvious choice for the boards. One unanticipated spinoff is that it is gender neutral. I’m not sure what I think of that, and may change it. Besides, the J and the relatively small number of letters is not ideal for some of the games that appear on MPSIMS.
