How did you get your username?

Hey, I just got it!

I know that “Cold Fire” is a song from Rush’s 1993 album. Not their most celebrated album, but hey, maybe Coldfire likes it.
Anyhow, my trade is in algorithms. Hence, Algorithm.

From an old (1970’s) Mad Magazine satire about CB Radios.
It was used as a ‘handle’ (I think that’s what they were called – as in “Hey good buddy! What’s yer handle?”).

Do you mean strychnine ? And, would this be a reference to Hawaiian Baby Woodrose seeds? Just curious.

We live on a farm and I’m the woman

The Lady of the Lake,…
[angels sing]
…her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft a honking big neon sign from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Cindy, was to bear the name of flodnak.
[singing stops]

At MSN Communities, my main stomping grounds, I’m well known as Dr. Bedlam.

On Yahoo, I’m also known as Tom O’Bedlam.

For some reason, the SDMB refused to allow those to be used.

After trying both of those, and four or five others in desperation, I typed in “Wang-Ka,” a funny and tasteless name I’d seen someone else using on some other message board.

…and lo, the SDMB permitted it to go through.

So I’m a wang-ka, now and forever…

Spogga in some parts of the UK is the slang for chewing gum.
My initials are PK and as Wrigleys market a brand of gum called PK I got the nickname at school.

Ho Hum

pilot141, that is one honkin’ big plane!

So I have to confess to not being very creative:
My name is Misty.

I fell out of an airplane and the rest is history…

pilot141, When did they retire that plane? I jumped out of one a couple times just last year. Possibly it belonged to an AirGuard unit though…

Oh and for my username… it’s my simply my real name with a “_” in the middle. Creative, huh?

A coworker and I used to talk about everything on breaks, we both were capable of yakking about almost anything. We’d wander through 15 tangents in 15 minutes. So I got the idea when I couldn’t think of anything else.

The Lady of the Lake,

her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite

held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water,

signifying by divine providence

that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur.

THAT is why I am your king!

I’m sorry. What?

I couldn’t sleep, and I registered for the boards at 4 in the morning. That, and a lot of the things I originally typed in were taken.

Bear_Nenno if you jumped out of one last year then yes, it was most likely a Guard or Reserve airplane. There is only one squadron of active-duty C-141s left, and they do the Special Ops Low-Level mission.

EddyTeddyFreddy, yeah the 141 was pretty big. There’s always something bigger though!

I’ll see your C-141 and raise you an Antonov AN-225.

Oh, and my name is Mike. I also fly planes.

I love Madonna. Therefore, kung fu and Lola (she’s the little one on the left). It just seemd natural. I originally thought up the name for use on the Madonna messageboards. We were a huge, peaceful, healthy throng on dotmusic.com, but when the mods all defected and the place became overrun with trolls, we all fled to the now-defunct Madonnarama board. With the fresh start on 'Rama, I changed my username to kfl. When I came to Straight Dope, I was a superstar on the the Madonna MBs, so I re-used my MoMo MB name as a good luck charm. I’m starting to wish I hadn’t wasted Fifty-Foot Kimono on my ex-gf though (I thought that one up for her to use at 'Rama). That’s a great user name.

User names are very important. They should be chosen only after a long period of reflection and meditation.

I intended to do just that. Instead, one day I got the hots to post something, so I had to sign up and pull a name off the top of my head (or, in view of my persona, out of my hat). (P.S.: the hamsters ate the post.)

I’ve always been a big fan of Bullwinkle Jay Moose, and allegedly do a first-rate imitation of the moronic moose; also, its kinda fun when I can slip in a vague reference to Bullwinkle and friends (I’m much to fond of referring to GWB as Fearless Leader).

Figuring Bullwinke had already been used (it had) I opted for the initials-and-last-name form. Alas, the initials BJ don’t look so good. . . But it does suggest this sig: Is it true generous Canadian beer drinkers enjoy giving Moosehead?

My name goes back to the early days of internet bulletin chat. It seemed everybody was giving her/himself names like rAMrOD and FockseeLaydee and #1Hottee and StudHunk. So, in a spirit of contrariness, I took the name Scumpup. It was a name that my ex-wife and I originally came up with to call the lead character in the “Shining Force” games, if you remember them.
