How difficult is it for an airplane to recover from a stall?

The accounts of Air France Flight 447 don’t seem to answer a basic question. I understand that improper attitude caused the plane to lose lift, but it took more than three minutes for it to fall into the ocean. Could the pilots have recovered control?

For example, could they have announced on the intercom: “All passengers please walk toward the front of the plane.” That would have helped bring the nose down, right? :dubious:

(I’m afraid my question is so naive I’ll be called an imbecile, but that’s nothing new.)

There are two threads on the front page containing detailed discussions on this issue.

Oops. So I was right about the “septimus is an imbecile” part. :smack:
