My tv display seems to be too big - it used to be that when I changed the channel with the remote, the channel number would show up in the bottom left corner. That doesn’t happen any more - when I enter the channel number, i can just barely see the tops of teh numbers.
TV is a Sharp Acquos.
Do you have cable/satellite with it’s own remote? I have Dish and that sort of thing is on the Dish remote.

Example: To the right of the two red buttons at the top,the top grey button(page) lets me change HD from normal-stretch-partial zoom-full zoom-grey bars.
You’ll need to dig up the instructions for TV and cable remotes and see if either has similar settings.

I’ve been through the same thing but it was years ago. You may have a conflict between the TV aspect ratio setting and the cable box setting. I think you need to let the cable box do all the adjusting.
I’ve not been able to find anything, so will call my cable provider. It just occurred to me that it only started after I had a new cable box installed.
Both my TV remote and the cable remote have buttons labeled “format” and they can each change it, although they don’t seem to do it the same.
