How do I buy a toilet seat?

I double checked and measured my toilet which is round. The round shape is really a bit oval but the enlongated one is uh, pointier toward the front. Enlongated bowls/seats are more common in public restrooms and round are more common in homes

Okay, I found this.

I don’t know how accurate it is, but between that and a measurement of my toilet (and possibly a template) I’m still not comfotable ordering online. I guess I’ll have to schlep to the store.

Thanks everyone.

And no, I won’t be going with vinyl, your butt sticks! Anyway, who sits on the toliet long enough to need padding?

The vinyl toilet seats are padded, therefore more comfy; also, not as freakin’ cold at 2AM! However, they tend to develop splits in the vinyl, sometimes in just the right spot to catch a hair and pull  They, are, however, ridiculously inexpensive. If I was going to go with padded, I’d buy a spare, and just store it somewhere.

Sue, the difference is much greater than 1/10 of an inch. Sorry I don’t have an enlongated bowl toilet here to measure but it’s quite a bit longer than a round bowl. I installed one in my parents house and the extra length was enoughmy dad could no longer get his wheelchair past it. Look at toilets in public restrooms. Handicap toilets which have a higher seat I think are all enlongated bowl. You’ll see a distinct difference in the shape.

As for the padded vinyl seats I don’t like them either but they are quiet.

I meant loud as in my daughter can’t set the seat down nicely, she just lets it drop…WHAM!! I think a hard plastic seat will take care of that, and be easier to clean/disinfect.

There are a lot of things in NYC that are not standard. Its not safe there to assume that a standard seat will fit.

When I moved to NYC, my couch (normal size) would not fit through my door. We took the legs off of it and it took 3 of us over an hour to squeeze it through the door. When I moved, I hired professional movers and they could not get it out.

Sue, I’d try Gracious Home at Broadway and 68th or so. If anyone is going to have a selection of toilet seats and someone to help you find the right one, Gracious Home will be it.

Unless her toilet is an antique I’d bet a Coke™* that it takes a standard round seat. Plumbing fixtures tend to be more standardized than furniture.
*Pepsi™ in areas where Coca-Cola® not available. Offer void where prohibited.
