I am on dialup so I don’t have bandwidth to spare…This windows update downloaded something and was complete…then it asked me to restart and I said no…after that every 5 minutes a window popped up asking me if I wanted to restart.
What idiot wrote this program? If I was ready to restart I would do it…
anyway sorry for the rant. Now the program is downloading again. I killed it in task manager and 20 seconds later it is back! It’s like a case of herpes. Can I stop this?
You don’t mention which Windows you are using. I went to Control Panel, then System, then looked for “stop windows update”. I’m on XP professional. YMMV.
To make sure it isn’t sneaking updates in the background, type “services.msc” (minus quotes) into the run box and disable the service “Background Intelligent Transfer Service.” Now Windows can’t download in the background while you’re trying to read the boards!
(Disclaimer: I don’t know exactly what BITS does so do this at your own risk… but I’ve found it’s not essential to surfing the net and if you shut it off it breaks Windows Update good. You can always turn it back on if lacking it does something undesired)
