Well, me and my lovely girlfriend are approaching the six-month mark rapidly, and I was thinking of getting her a ring.
Thing is, I dunno what size she is.
I asked one of her friends, but she didn’t know. My girlfriend is living at home (as opposed to at college) now, so there aren’t many friends around that could help me out. She does wear a ring so I suppose I could steal that one, but A) if her hands are anything like mine, because one finger is a certain size, it sdon’t mean any other one is that size, and B) I’d like to keep it a surprise, but unfortunately, I think I’ve waited too long for that to be feasible by the six-month mark.
Any help and suggestions would be appreciated, as would stories about how you fellas have worked the magic.
When I bought a wedding ring for my wife, I didn’t know her ring size either. The jeweler simply told me “If it doesn’t fit, bring her in with the ring and we’ll fix it…”
zev_steinhardt- I suppose this is still a possibility, but I’m ordering this ring online (the site is linked in the OP- the word “ring”). Is it plausible to order it online and bring it back to a friendly neighborhood jeweler?
I must admit, I have zero experience with this sort of thing. Once again, thank God for the SDMB, and thanks those who have/will respond/ed.
Does she have any rings that she dosen’t wear every day? Nick one and take it with you to the store.
or
make a little card that has a place for every size on it. something like
Hat
Blouse
Skirt
Dress
Pants
Bra
Panties
Stockings
Ring
Shoes
Ask her to fill this out so you can buy her some presants when ever you want.
Important detail (well, at least in my case)- this is not an engagement ring. Not a promise ring, either. If I understand what a promise ring is, it seems silly at best. But hopefully, I don’t understand it.
However, creative and original is good though, is any endeavor.
If you’re getting one of those rings from the site you linked to, with the custom text, you will not be able to resize it once it’s made. If you needed it made smaller or larger you’d have to chop out a letter or add in extra space–not the way to go. Go with Zebra’s ideas.
There are paper ring sizers that a ring store might have or maybe you can find online. When she is asleep you can just check it on her finger.
Also, if this isn’t an engagement/wedding ring I am pretty sure she can wear it on whichever finger it fits on.
Gaudere- Yeah, I thought that might be the case, except maybe if there’s space between the end of the phrase and the beginning, like a seam on the back.
(Maybe I’ll just friggin’ e-mail the guy and ask. :wally)
I, having keptomanic tendencies, would steal a ring for a day and have a jeweler look at it and tell me the size.
Or you can do what my friend did and take a ring of hers - when she’s in the bathroom or something - slide it onto one of your fingers until it’s snug, go to a jeweler (or get one of the paper ring sizing thingies), point to your finger, at the point the ring felt snug, and say “Her finger is that big.”
Happens all the time, or so he said the jeweler said.
Yeah, but like I said above, my left middle finger is not the same size of the right middle finger, so I wouldn’t trust that judgement. I dunno, maybe [insert hand excercise joke here].
I ostensibly goofed around with a gum wrapper, little did he know I squirreled it away and measured it later…just make sure you get it measured over the knuckle so she’ll be able to get it on.
symplicity said, “I am pretty sure she can wear it on whichever finger it fits on.”
just wanted to add that this is often not correct because peoples fingers don’t conveniently span sizes. go with zebra’s idea! then you won’t have to worry about any sizes in the future, unless she gets significantly larger or smaller.
well … most rings in a display case are size 6. Not like that will help you any. Generally if the person is right handed their right fingers will be slightly larger than the left. about a 1/2 size.
Aside from all the clever advice about getting her ring size without her knowing, since this is an everyday ring, trust me when I say whatever size you get, she’ll make it fit.
Does she have big hands? Because I do, and if you got me a ring in a size 6 or whatever, I wouldn’t be able to fit it on any of my fingers. I think I wear an 8.5 or 9 on my ring finger. Anyway, there are some good ideas here.
Normally you may take a ring purchased elsewhere to your neighborhood jeweler and have it resized, but with a ring like this, I wouldn’t risk it.
I repeat: Zebra’s idea is great. You would then have all this info available when buying other gifties…and she wouldn’t think to herself, “he’s getting me a ring!”
I briefly borrowed another ring of hers, slipped it over my finger, traced the stopping place with a pen and took my finger to the jeweler and tried ring sizers on until one met the same line.
Worked fine.
Make sure what you buy can be resized. People still change over time. Resizing at a local store isn’t too expensive.
