So, over the summer I received a pair of Etymotic ER-6 Isolator [head/ear]phones as a gift. For those who’ve never heard of them, they’re not really headphones at all, just tiny transducers that you put in your ear canal. Apparently, once you get them in there, the sound quality is incredible. However, if you don’t get them to seal with your ear canal, they sound like crap.
There’s only one problem - I can’t get the damned things to fit into my ears! No matter how hard I try, even when I push them as far as I dare, they don’t seal. They just sit there loosely, and wobble around when I move my head. It seems like I’m not pushing them far enough, but when I push them any further it feels like they bump up against something solid inside my ear. I’m worried that if I try to apply any more force, I’ll punch the little buggers right through my eardrums.
So, does anyone have experience with this type of headphone? How deep do you have to put them? Is it possible to push them too far (how far away from the outside of the ear is the eardrum?) I don’t even know if I’m putting them in at the right angle - should they go in straight, angled up/down/forward/back, or what?
Any help would be appreciated, because I’d really like to get these things working.
