Me again with a car related question, this time about transporting my tunes between cars.
In car one, “X,” I’ve digitized my entire CD collection.
Car two, my 2004 “Red,” has a CD player and an input cable for a fifth generation iPod. It has an after-market DVD/CD/Nav/Bluetooth system, the iPod is the only input jack.
Could this “copy over” plan work?
-Export tunes from car X to its USB drive (car X is newish and has all the digital bells and whistles, including a USB port).
-Access the USB on my laptop, connect the iPod, and transfer files to it.
Plug iPod into Red and enjoy my tunes!
Would my wiley plan work? I’ve never had an MP3 or iPod, so I don’t know much about their workings.
My laptop doesn’t have a CD drive, so “hard copying” to an iPod isn’t an option.
I work in OEM automotive audio- it might help to know what car one is, then I can look into how it stores media and if it’s possible to get it back off.
I posted to your other thread (I believe it is your thread, but I’m too lazy to double-check) about using your cell phone (or an older cell phone) as a source and connecting via Bluetooth. I started doing this for several reasons, but one is that I can move my music source/player from car to car. If the car has BT capability (as your “Red” seems to), I use that. If it only has an AUX input, I use that. This gives me the same UI, same media files, same playlists, and virtually identical experiences. Much, much easier.
Not my thread, but a good point, I can’t get my phone to pair with the car’s Bluetooth and I don’t have an AUX jack (I used wrong choice of words). I’ve a cable to fit an iPod and two coaxial for DVD display/audio(?), both of which are hardwired to the Kenwood receiver.
Car one = 2014 BMW X3 (has all digital/ electronics available in '14).
Car two = 2004 BMW 330ci. After-market Kenwood receiver, has coaxial cables for DVD (I think that’s the purpose) and a 30 pin for an iPod (I think - don’t have an iPod to check). They are hardwired into the unit and come out of the glove box.

Well, since we crossed threads already … how do you store media on a car’s internal hard drive? Is this a special option for BMWs or does it exist on my Honda Fit and I just don’t know it?
The USB looks like the port in a computer. A cursory Google search yields that newer Fits can have the USB option.
I have several options:
-Insert a CD and save it to the car (then the physical CD isn’t needed again).
-Plug my USB into the port and import from drive to car’s data storage.
-Import tunes via Bluetooth to car memory.
yep, like FinsToTheLeft said, this should work. I wasn’t 100% on what features iDrive has, but I looked on YouTube and you can export to USB like you said. all you’ll need to to is use iTunes, use the “add file/folder to library” function in the menu, and plug in the iPod and have iTunes sync to it. Done!
You can just plug the USB drive into the laptop and have iTunes import straight from there, but you might first have to go into iTunes preferences and make sure “copy files to iTunes library folder” is enabled.
I have a BMW also and when we replaced it the BMW folks transferred my tunes for me (at my request, because I am a tech dolt). One album was missing, but most made it over.
