How do I know my Internet usage on an always-on cable connection?

Currently I have internet via cable provider. I will be moving to the country where it is not available. However I have signed up for a satellite connection. The satellite provider allows a limited amount of download per month after which the company throttles your connection to 128K. I am trying to get a general idea of my usage, but when I view my current connections status, Windows reports in packets received/sent not bytes received. Is there any way to convert the number of packets into MBytes of data? Or is there some way to have the connection status report back in bytes instead of packets like the dial-up status connections do?

Thanks, yoyodyne. I’ll give it a try.

You can use PRTG and let it run for a week.

From The 46 Best-ever Freeware Utilities:

Who’s the satellite provider? I have WildBlue, and they have an admin page where you can track, among other things, your bandwidth over the last three months. I’ve never even come close to the limit (but then again, I’m not a big downloader).

I haven’t moved yet, but I will have WildBlue —it’s already installed. I wanted to see what my current usage averages. How is WildBlue? I’m looking forward to checking it out this weekend.
