How do I make my home network... cooler?

I’ve currently got two computers linked in the same room. Both are running Windows XP Home Edition.

Now what we’ve got going at the moment is fine (both printers are linked to one computer, for space reasons, and multiplayer games are running fine)

Thanks to them sucking-but-being-free, I use AOL as an ISP, which means the internet connection cannot be shared yet.

Other than what we’ve got going, the network seems a little… stagnant.

Is there any way we can do some cool things? I’ve got an MP3 player connected to my USB port. Can the other computer “see” it, and run the Playcenter software to control it? Could the sound come out of the other computer’s speakers?

What about being able to view the same output on both screens? Say I’m watching a DVD on my PC, can the other one “patch in” to the output and show the same movie?

Any other neat tricks?

Since you are running XP, you can use the “Remote Assistance” program to use one computer to control the other. Loads of fun with an unsuspecting family member.

I think you should be able share the MP3 player across the network… I’ll have to try it with my Rio.

Install one of these.

My favorite part is putting the Power and Link lights in the eyes.

although i have no specific knowledge about AOL, i don’t see why you can’t share the internet connection using NAT.

try this:

and for remote control, use VNC, it’s amazingly powerful and extremely light :

Sadly not, as I’m running the Home edition. :frowning:

Wow…!

AOL tech support said “no”, and various google hits indicate the same thing.

Brilliant…
Thanks, everyone who replied.

FOR GOD’S SAKE, DON’T SPEND A DIME ON WINGATE!!!**

I got that load of crap when I bought my wireless home network hardware, and I spent 3 months trying to get it to work or out of my computers, before I turned on the built-in MS Internet Connection Sharing. Love or hate Microsoft, ICS works the first time, everytime.

      • You can infect one with a virus and watch it spread to the other.

Um, wipe everything, install Linux and make them a (small) Beowulf cluster? Sure, dunno what you’d do with it, but it’d sure as hell be cool. Well, I’d think you were cool, anyway.
