how do I reserve a web domain name?

I might want to set up a web-page and I wonder how I reserve a domain name?

It’s easy. Just go to one of the many companies that will reserve it for you. It’s really easy to do. You just need a credit card. Here are a few companies:

register.com

There are many others. You’ll be an annual fee and the address will remain yours for as long as you pay it. I think they all offer discounts for multiple years. At this point, it’s hard to get a simple domain name, especially if what you want is a “.com” name, but you’ll just have to get creative.

I use 1and1 and am very happy with them.

They usually vary their prices with special offers at the beginning of each month. Usually the info domains go on sale cheap once or twice a year.

Be aware of the concept of domain front-running. This means when you test out several domain possibilities with a registrar trying to find one that works for you and is not already registered, some registrars have been accused of automatically registering the domains you are thinking about before you can actually register one. Network Solutions was accused of doing this, denied ever doing it, then in the same breath said they wouldn’t do it again.

godaddy.com and register.com are two good candidates to search for domain name possibilities, even if you choose to use neither when you find a name and register it.
