How do I rip a DVD to be played on my ipod?

I am going on a trip and want to rip some of my DVDs to my ipod. Is there a free software that can do this? Or do you have another suggestion?

If I remember correctly, if you brute force the encryption, it isn’t illegal, as nothing was actually unencrypted. (and that there is software out there that does just that) And that there is some provision for interoperability between different OSes. And an iPod is just a small computer, as evidenced by the fact that you can run Linux on it. So the iPod firmware is just another OS.
