It’s likely that “give up” parses to a single word in Greek. What’s the connotation of the sentence?

For example, is “I surrender” in Greek good enough? Or is it more like the following:

A: Guess what I got for my birthday?
B: I give up. What?

The context is like this:

“Ok. You are too clever. I cannot best your last rejoinder in our top-this reparte. I give up.”

If I had wanted to suggest a reference to the French, I would have included a French battle flag in my posting.

Wait, their battle flag is a white rectangle. Perhaps I did. It is starting to make sense.

I guess it is a good thing I am not asking for a translation into French, after all. It looks like it’d be hard to get, now.

I don’t know any Greek (well, very little); I used Google to find an English-Greek dictionary that gave examples of phrases containing the word, and then to find a Greek-English machine translator that gave me the correct verb conjugation, and was consistent with the dictionary examples. I did require my knowledge of the Greek alphabet to read the results, though.

The word παραδίνω (or παραδίδω) means either “to give up a possesion” or “to deliver”. To say “I surrender (myself)” you have to use the passive form of the verb, which is παραδίνομαι (or παραδίδομαι).

But the word you are looking for is παραιτούμαι. Turn the keyboard into greek and type “paraito;ymai” (without the quotation marks). It means “I quit”, but it fits better in the context you want to use it.
