How do I sell a (collectable) gun?

I have a Winchester Model 94 rifle (not a carbine) that was made in 1932. It has a rifle-length octagonal barrel. (I don’t remember the length. 24"? It’s in storage right now.) I’ve never fired it, and I don’t really need it. I suppose I could take it to a gun shop, but IME gun shops are not really good places to get a decent price for an antique. eBay is out of the question, since they don’t do firearms.

I also have a new-in-the-box Winchester Model 94 Canadian Centennial Commemorative (made in 1967) carbine with an octagonal barrel. The lever has a zip-tie on it, so it may be possible that the action has never been worked. (I’ll bet it has, though – just not very much.)

Is there an eBay type auction site where I could sell them? (I know it would have to be shipped to a dealer, and all state and federal laws would have to be complied with.) eBay is ‘the’ place for auctions. Is there a ‘the place’ for auctioning firearms?

Also: Anyone have any idea of how much they’re worth?

Auction Arms is an eBay-type site.

You probably need to look in a physical blue book of gun values to get a price. They can be found at many large bookstores in the gun section. Here is one example:

There’s a 2-gun Canadian Commemorative set that was posted yesterday for a starting bid of $900. There’s also a single carbine for $395 (no bids). I was thinking around $650 for mine. I also see several pre-'64 Model 94s on the site. I want at least $400 for mine.

Thanks for the link. I’m not in any hurry, but I’ll probably put them on offer after the first of the year.

If there are Gun Shows in your area you will find collectors there!
Ask around for contacts. The dealers may steer you to some.

Find A Gun Show In Your Area

If you are in the US, you (or your buyer) need at least a C&R (Curios & Relics) license to sell it. You will have to check the ATF web site to see if your gun qualifies (I think it does). If it does not qualify, one of you will need a Federal Firearms License.

In looking at that site one of the keys to getting good offers seems to be taking a bunch of really clear, close up digital pics. Do you have a decent digital camera?

Not necessarily. A C&R license or an FFL is needed to deal/sell guns across state lines. If you’re selling to someone in the same state, it’s governed by the laws of your particular state.

In other words, if I’m ordering guns from another state to sell them in my own state, I need a C&R or FFL.

If I’m selling grandpa’s old shotgun via an want-ad in the newspaper, as long as it is being sold to someone in my own state, it’s only regulated by my state. And since I live in Texas, there aren’t any regulations.
