How do I sell my old baseball card collection?

I collect too much junk. I also could use some extra cash so I want to sell my old baseball cards. I don’t think I have many card worth over a hundred dollars but I’m not sure yet. I’m also completely ignorant on quality grading. I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Along with Beanie Babies and other collectibles, eBay killed the baseball card market. eBay made it clear that just because a 1972 Rod Carew card may be very scarce in Podunk, Indiana, there are millions of them around the country and they can be easily shipped for less than a buck.

So unless your cards are pre-1970 and in very good condition, don’t expect to get much at all for your collection. There are thousands of unopened cases of cards in peoples basements from around 1980 on. Your best bet would be to take them to a dealer and offer the collection as a whole and hope you get 30% of what the price guides claim they’re “worth”. You could also put the whole thing on eBay yourself and hope you get lucky.

That’s just the way it is.

Guides are not accurate for prices they never real have been. Best place to check prices is E-bay. If your willing to spend a huge amount of time E-bay would be your best bet for maximising your profit. It would entai hundreds of listings and hundreds of different customers. There are companies that you can pay to ebay for you, but at the percentages they charge it’s questionable if it is worth while or not.

My recomendation is find a reputable dealer, that is intrested in sitting down going through the entire collection and offering a fair price. Dealers capable of doing that are generaly going to be the ones you find at conventions that make their living turning over inventory frequently.

Anybody wanna buy a Gretzky rookie card?

Anybody wanna buy five of 'em?

Throw 'em out. You’ll help make everybody else’s worth more.

Thats what I did, why do you think Honus Wagner is worth so much I threw out like 50 of them.

I had a mint, rookie-year Mickey Mantle card once, but getting the Cheez Doodles powder off of it was a bitch…

How many do you have? What years are they?

If you have enough to ship easily, list them as a lot on eBay and be done with them. Don’t get your hopes up, they’re not worth much.

If you happen to have 50’s or 60’s cards, send me an email (in my profile) with SDMB in the subject.
